Need reassurance! D40 body

Sorry to be a pest folks, I'm going to re-post something I put on the 'Welcome' as I'm worried I've gone too basic with a camera body and spent too much on a lense - but I am a TOTAL beginner! Any thoughts welcome. Any other 'essentials' I need?

Gulp. Gone and done it now.

Have ordered a D40 kit (242 inc. 30 cashback)
3 x Compact Flash cards, Sandisk III extremes 2GB at 13.50 each
The VR 18-200 lens, SB400 flash and the remote control for 499

Can't really think of what else I'll need - I've got Aperture 2 on a Macbook Pro and a half-decent A4 printer. I thought that by going cheap as possible with the body I could learn the ropes, and if it's for me, later move up to D300, leaving the D40 as a back-up/spare for the wife.

I cannot wait for them to arrive through the post and get started!

You'll need to replace those CF cards. D40 takes SD cards not compact flash.

I think I'll keep them rather than send them back to play.com as I have a feeling I'll upgrade fairly soon. Digital photography will have a steep learning curve, but I'm an intrepid climber!

Re: Need reassurance! D40 body

It's always worth having a decent lens even from the beginning, cos then you don't have to think about immediately upgrading the lens once you upgrade your camera

Re: Need reassurance! D40 body

as long as you have good glass you will find it cheaper in the long run to upgrade the body, so i think you have probably done the right thing....... well apart frmo going to Nikon in the first place anyway!

Re: Need reassurance! D40 body

Thanks for all the comments folks - even Fi with the Canon thing hoing on!

Can anyone recommend a polaroid filter for the 72mm VR18-200? It seems having one of these on it is a good idea going by some of the stuff I've read online. Thanks.

Re: Need reassurance! D40 body

Do you mean a polariser? And I suppose it's a good thing to have, but I wouldn't say it's essential, and it would be worth learning how to get the best out of it. Simply having it on wont do you much good....

I'm not sure to be honest - would I be better to just get out and about with the lens as it is, then start finding out about polarisers/filters etc? I'm worried that I'm missing something obvious - probably because Mr Rockwell has a pic of a VR lens 'complete with 72->77mm step-up and 77mm filter', and I'm wondering if a filter/protector is worth having from the outset. Sorry to be so vague!

Re: Need reassurance! D40 body

Many people use a UV or Skylight filter for lens protection, and if you want to do this there is no harm done. However, you do need to get a good quality one. There are many makes around, but I think you will find the brand leader is Hoya.

The step-up ring simply is an adaptor that will allow a larger filter to fit a smaller lens - it saves buying two filters. You don't have to use/buy the step up ring.
