Need Your Help/Advice

Hi there people

I have recently started a photography club at a local high school and we are going to hosting our very first photo contest in Nov.

I will be having the members (mainly teenagers and pretty new shooters) act as the judging panel.

I was wondering are there certain guidelines or things that can serve as a guide for these kids for their judging? I have never judged before myself so I was wondering is there are any resources out there or should we just go with what we like?

The photo contest has 3 categories

Landscape
Animals
People

A winner will be chosen for each category

Thank you

Re: Need Your Help/Advice

If they are all new to photography I would go with what people like, I have seen many winning photographs in competitions that are technically brilliant but are crap photographs.
If they are all new to photography they wont know too much about the techy aspect of photography so just go with what they like.
Ive been into this photo stuff for years and still know far less of the technical side than I ought to but I manage to make a living from it.

Re: Need Your Help/Advice

My Club runs a county wide annual Photographic competition for schools. We spit into Primary and Secondary Schools. I have judged with two other experienced Judges for the last 6 years.

Try to put aside what you think is normal and forget your favourite subjects etc. The important thing is to look at what is in front of you. Try to see what the photographer saw. Of course you can compare the children's entries with each other. We have found that the young children particularly are not influenced by what adults consider to be normal. They see interesting aspects of nature, their own toys and produce some excellent images of their friends and relatives. They take images of their friends from their own height and their friends react in a different way to what they would for an adult. All primary schools will have digital Cameras and computers now. Often the print is on ordinary paper but photographic ink jet paper is expensive for schools. We look at the picture and do not worry too much about the print quality.

Do not under estimate the teenagers. Many will have attended good art classes which may also include photography. They often have a good eye for a picture and can be more daring in finding a different angle or approach. Again you need to be very open minded in your approach and try to see what the photographer saw and teenagers are quite capable of communicating a message with their photography. Avoid comparing with your own photography. I would not choose a winner just because I like it but identify why that is. Why do you think it is better than others? We have always used qualified and experienced judges but I see no reason why they cannot be judged by their peers.

Best of luck, I think you will enjoy the judging.

Yes....
Screw up "the rule book" and have some fun....
Getting people interested in Photography, the first step is to tell them what they are doing right, make the first competition just for fun so they enjoy it.
"That looks good" is the best reason for it being a winner... that can then be used to fuel the debate, "Why does that look good"
