Re: new camera?????

I've a Fuji 602Z and only moved onto a dSLR as I was coming up against the shortcomings of a bridge camera, like manual focus, shutter lag and noise. If you think you want to move on, then do so, but if you're finding you're comfortable with what you're using I'd recommend continuing with it

Re: new camera?????

Well, I decided that I didn't like the interpolation that was being done on the Fuji (one reason why I went for the Sigma RAW-only SD10) which was coming out soft in the detail in detailed landscapes, so yes, moving to a dSLR with 'better' lenses did improve the quality of my pics - but it did nothing to improve my compositions!

There's also the point of DOF, which is inevitably greater on a bridge camera (due to sensor size) and I wanted to have the choice

Re: new camera?????

I found my dslr a tad daunting at first.. but I love it now, can do so much more regarding settings. As an example my old fujifim s8000 had an aperture range of f2.3 to f8 (iirc).. my canon eos 400 has a range from 5.6 to29.. or something similar.

can i point out that your 400D does NOT have an aperture range its dependant on the lens you are using. For example you may have a lens that says f4 which is its largest aperture, then u may change it to a lens which is f2.8 which is THAT lenses widest aperture.
Unlike a bridge camera where the aperture is the same because its the same lens on it all the time, a DSLR will change aperture values when the lenses are changes. hope i explained that ok.

Remember that having a dslr will not improve the quality of an image IF there is things like camera shake, or wrong focal points etc THAT part of quality is down to the user.

Re: new camera?????

The things that made a difference for me moving from a bridge camera to DSLR were the improved view through the viewfinder for composition and the reduced shutter lag time. I have always found it hard to compose from the camera back rather than the eyepiece - but my kids seem to get good shots with their various 'little' cameras.

Re: new camera?????

I agree with most of the comments, but bear in mind how far do you want to go in photography. Dslr territory can be very expensive. Speaking from personal experience, go for the highest spec body you can afford then learn how to use it, that saves having to upgrade later and saves you the depreciation on your original gear. Decide where your real interests lay i.e landscape, close-up, macro or wide angle etc and buy the appropriate gear only. Start with a good quality fast prime 50mm and develope your skills then purchase further lenses as you need them, but only as you need them...I pesonally am a Sigma fan; they offer good quality at a reasonable price, but its all down to personal choice but also keep in mind that low cost does not neccessarily mean low quality;I have some really excellent lenses that cost under £100.00. Like I stated earlier,it all boils down to how far you want to go with your photography!
