New memory card etc

Hi
As a very much newbie, I hope you can give some advice. I am trapped in the house awaiting delivery of a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens - so to while away the time, whilst hubby is safely at work, I've decided to trawl Amazon for more 'bits'.
I think I'll start with a bigger memory card - any ideas/recommendations, and maybe a tripod? Any advice appreciated!

Hi Nellie,

I've just bought a 2GB SD card from Morrisons, they are on special offer at 7.49. I havent seen them that price anywhere else.

Hi - thanks for that - I'll have a look in our local Morrisons to see if they have any in stock. For now I'm looking at a Sandisk 4 GB card on Amazon...

I gues you are talking about Compact Flash cards as it is for a Canon. I recently bought a 4 GB card from Picstop for about 17. That ofer may still be on.

If you ldo decide to look on Ebay one word of advice do not buy CF cards from Hong Kong. They are almost certainly will be fake. I know I have one . It does work OK though.

Hi
Sandisk ultra II CF 4 GB for 14.20 on Amazon - you will have to advise me on the difference in quality as I am still learning...I am also disturbed to find that I am excited by the link to the tripod...does this mean that I have been bitten by the photography bug?

Re: New memory card etc

I assume that itis the graduated legs on that tripod that have excited you - but lets not go into that.

The different types of card I, II, III and IV all relate to how fast the data can be written to and from the card. Usually the faster the better BUT camera may not be able to send data at the full speed of the card. I do not know what the 400d writes at. Faster cards can of course transer data to the computer at higher speeds but for most people that is not really important. You can always make a cup of coffee while you are waiting. I would think the card you mention will be Ok for all your needs. (Someone truely bitten by the bug will of course see the 2-3 minutes you may save downloading from a faster card as absolutely vital.)

Also it is probably better to buy 2 of the 4 GB cards instead of one 8 GB if you ever get tempted.

That Velbon tripod is a good one but you need to understand what you want to do with it. Ridigity is most important. Weight no so much if you are not planning to go walking with it. If you only want it for use in a studio you probably do not need the expensive carbon fibre. Do you need the low level ability ? There are a lot out there to choose from. Flexibility is good but it comes at a price.

Finally re the photo bug. You may have an early case of it but until you can find a reason that makes perfect sense to you to ditch your fully working and very capable 400D for a new 40D and spend several hundred pounds doing it or you absolutley must have that new lens that just came out you are not really hooked.
