Is it worth the money buying a D3 or saving a few quid and buy a D700 its seems like the same spec and the extra cash could be spent a fast lens!

Re: Nikon Users

D3 is the one if you want the speed, battery life and don't mind the weight/bulk, otherwise the D700 has most of the spec. I think Ken Rockwell has listed the differences between the D3 and D700, but the only ones I can remeber is that the D700 has a 95% viewfinder v 100%, one CF slot v 2, and a different focus screen.

The cash saved will go a long way towards the 24-70 f2.8 (or the 14-24 f2.8)

I was going to get a second D300 body, but now decided to go for a D700. Just going to have to wait for a bit longer.

Re: Nikon Users

Yeh I have seen Ken Rockwells report! which is a good indicator..... I still have a few fast lenses from my film days and I would love a full frame its just the 95% viewing thats a bit annoying on the D700 I am having a hard think about it there is no rush as my D300 always delivers the goods! which I am very happy with.I am still certain that this camera (D700) will be replaced soon and then I will pounce!

I personally know of one person who traded in his D3 for a D700 and couldn't be happier.

Well although I would love a D3 I don't do enough Sports or photography where the camera gets bashed about to justify it. I'll be getting the D700

Re: Nikon Users

Here is my two cents worth

Would I LIKE a D3 - heck yeah but I am not going to go BUY one. If someone were to give me one I would gladly take it over a D300 or D700, but for that price and for what I do I just don't see it making much sense. If you are a pro and your clients will only hire you because you have the top of the line cameras then well you do what you have to.

D700 Vs D300 Vs D300s

If you want HD video then wait for the D300s (It also has dual card slots which I do like)

D700 VS D300 is a choice you have to make carefully

D700 is full frame while D300 is still a cropped Frame

With Full Frame your image quality will be better, or so I am told.

If you want WIDE then the D700 is where you want to go, but if you want to go long then the crop factor of the D300 will give you that little extra reach.

Lens that are specifically made for the Cropped factored cameras like the D300 will not work well for the D700, while the D300 can take just about any Nikkor Lenses. (People help me out on that I am not 100% sure on this but I think the D300 can take any Nikkor lens that are at least AIS? but not AI or before right?)

For me lenses are more important than the body for what I do, so I would gladly take a D300 (or even a D200 second hand) over a D3 if it means more money for lenses.

Re: Nikon Users

I've had the D3 now for about 7 months. Am I happy with it?? Hell yeah. I choose it for two reasons. The first is for what the camera delivers in terms of picture quality and spec. The second is as an investment. I considered not long ago going the other way and changing for the D700...some may remember my post about it. I decided not to and in a way am glad. Technology moves quickly, however, with the D3 - and remember it was announced 2 years ago which is a long time in technology terms......is still one of the best DSLRs on the market. OK, Nikon have launched the D3X which is possibly better....but really only in terms of mp.

For what it's worth, if you can afford it...go for it...you WON'T be dissappointed I can assure you that.
