Question Number of pictures per hour?

I stumbled across a website called "Rules of Thumb", which has, well, rules of thumb. Such as: The sum of the rise and the run (height and width) of a stair should equal 17, plus or minus one.

They are broken down in categories, and there is even a section for photography. Nestled in between rules about exposure and placing the horizon is this gem:
A professional photographer should plan on exposing the equivalent of one roll of film per hour on the job. This applies for digital photography as well unless the photographer has become careless.
I called bull on this one... "A roll" is no more than 36 exposures... When I'm shooting someone in the studio, I'm doing at least 36 in 10 minutes, if not more. If I'm outside birding, it's a bit less, depending on how cooperative the wildlife is, but I still average about a hundred shots per hour. I've heard stories of photo journalists going through hundreds of rolls a day...

So, am I "careless", or is this man ?

I'm no professional but I volunteered to photograph my son's end of year cadet parade and I shot almost 400 pics in around 2 hours.

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

Well, I took close on 6k pics on my 6 week trip to Oz/NZ - but then I went to Martin Mere (wildlife site) and, despite the numerous subjects, took under 100 pics.

Personal pics, tend to compose, shoot, re-compose, shoot - so not many shots. Professional pics will tend to do up to half a dozen shots/comp

Number of pictures per hour?...

...As many as it takes is my thinking, whether that be 1 or several hundred depending of course on what your shooting.

My personal best (or worst depending on how you look at it ) was about 350 in an hour on a rally day shoot with a bunch of friends.

At work I shoot approx 40+ images in an hour but there is no real quality or composition involved.

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

i can shoot a couple of hundred in an hour, or i can shoot 20... it depends what i am shooting, where i am and what i "see". i have to admit if im on a planned shoot i.e. i know where i am going and what im gonna shoot i tend to shoot less, but if its a spur of hte moment shoot i tend to shoot lots!
i know rules are meant to be broken but this one doesnt even reach the starting line IMO

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

Hmm, with my 10x8 I might even get one a day! OK, it might take me an hour, its a leisurely thing. (takes an hour to get the thing out of the case on on a tripod, and thats allowing half hour for the mobile crane to arrive).

PS If you're shooting that many in an hour you're not taking enough care!

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

Well, when you're shooting wildlife, you do have to take that many...

You go off into the woods/swamp. Come upon bird, raccoon, manatee, whatever. Set up, set your camera for continuous shooting; take a couple of test shots to get at least one shot and check the lighting; set the focus and... wait.

Wait for the subject to do something interesting: stretch, grab a fish, take off, etc. When you seem them tense, start snapping shots because they usually move too quickly for you to capture the perfect pose. Sometimes they'll get ready to do something, then change their mind, then it's back to waiting, and those 5 shots you just took are for naught. A few shots every couple of minutes quickly add up. Then there's the shots of opportunity... a passing bird, an interesting cloud formation, a butterfly or a bug. I still say that if your outdoors and not shooting at least 60-80 an hour you're not looking hard enough.

Though if I was fortunate enough to be lugging a 10x8 about I suppose I'd be more particular about my shots too.

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

Imagine a pro-photographer at a football match shooting just 54 images, his/her picture editor is either gonna be happy at the fact he can go home early or annoyed by the lack of choice(i'm guessing the latter).
When i'm doing a stock shoot, we aim to have around 1800images at the end of the day and we get the models and stylists etc for about 8 hours (before we hae to start paying them more money), so you can do the math and i reckon it's a heap more than 36 or 24 or 12 or 9 or..... (obviously the format and size of roll will vary the amount you get) an hour!

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

Just goes to show different people take a different approach depending on the purpose of the shoot. Obviously a landscape photographer certainly could - and indeed would - take a much slower approach than a fashion photographer As I am inclined more to the landscape genre than the fashion one, I'm in Les' corner ... well I'm almost there ... I think I can, I think I can, pant, puff, groan ...

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

Think Charlotte is right, depends on what your shooting, Events will bring a higher yeild as you have more people and have to snap quicker as things unfold. An equestrian class every 30 minutes to 1 hour means at least 50-100 shots of a mix of the competitors unless only two enter of course! lol

Bit of a daft statement if you ask me, I get what he is saying but its a bit too sweeping.

You should take exactly 36 photographs in an hour. If you take any more or less you are a terrible terrible human being.

Checked my EXIF data from the time of the first shot to the last when it got too dark to see was 48.33 mins. At 29 shots that is 1.6666/minute which gives an hourly rate of 36. PHEW so I do not have to panic after all.

My standpoint for taking any shot is three of each.

One to Use ,One to Loose & One to throw away.

Re: Number of pictures per hour?

I am a professional photographer and as people say it depends on what you are taking.
At a car or bike meeting I will take somewhere between 800 to 1000 pics, studio shoot with one model 250 to 300 in 3 hrs.
I have however taken 3 pictures on one shoot that lasted some 11 hours. And then I did not get the shot I was after.
A wedding I will shoot somewhere between 500 and 1400 pics dependant on what they are paying for and want.
