About the Four Thirds System Standard
The Four Thirds System standard defines design and development standards for interchangeable lens type digital camera systems that fully realize the performance potential of digital technology. Four Thirds System cameras utilize a 4/3-type image sensor that delivers the high image quality expected of interchangeable lens type digital camera systems in a form factor that assures outstanding mobility. The Four Thirds System standard is an open standard that enables bodies and lenses produced by participating manufacturers to exchange information and be used interchangeably with one another.

Re: Olympus Four Thirds ?

Des, not sure I follow your question but for what its worth I had an oly E300 for a while, I found it a really great camera at low ISO. X2 crop factor so getting true wide was expensive.
To be honest I kind of regret selling it as I enjoyed it and am thinking about trying to buy it back as a second body.
The only reason I sold was I was given money for a birthday and wanted a camera with a larger viewfinder, that was the one real draw back on the 4 thirds for me. If you are thinking about one, have a look through the viewfinder first, dont know how the later models shaped up after the E500 so things may have improved but it was a bit like looking down a dark tunnel compared to my present DSLR and my OM1n.
Micro 4 thirds, I have no hands on experience.

Re: Olympus Four Thirds ?

I'm quite taken with Micro four thirds kit. I took my Pen EP-1 on holiday this year, along with my 5D. The results were astonishingly similar to when I used a Pen F half-frame SLR alongside a Nikon F, nearly 40 years ago.
  1. The weight difference is startling. How can such a small camera do anything useful.
  2. The quality under good conditions is amazing. At 100 ISO, the results are far closer to the full frame 5D than you might expect.
  3. The quality under poor conditions is abysmal. Turn the ISO up to 800 and the noise is truly ghastly whereas, at 800 ISO, the 5D is just a bit fuzzier than at 100 ISO but more than good enough for any practical purpose.
  4. Build quality is indistinguishable between the two cameras and their lenses.
The great thing about the EP-1 is just how useful it is with microscopes and telescopes. It's so much more convenient than a dSLR for those jobs.

Re: Olympus Four Thirds ?

Thanks for the answers guys! I have only ever used Nikon cameras in the past but a couple of years ago I won a E410 in a photo competition....I went out and shot about 500 images but I have not used it since.....I know this is a complete starter outfit but the quality of the images were very good for such a small camera..if there are any further comments that you would like to give me or tips then please keep em coming in...Thank You....oh and by the way I have not deserted Nikon I am half way through up grading!

Re: Olympus Four Thirds ?

Well one thing that comes to mind for me was the results I got with the oly 4 thirds to OM fit adapter to let me use manual lenses.
It was a hell of a lot of fun working to get the shot, sometimes I even got a keeper that I was pleased with and I guess like most here I'm my own worst critic

Re: Olympus Four Thirds ?

Just for interest here's a size comparison between an Olympus E500 4/3 camera and a Sony 350 both fitted with lenses that give the equivalent to a 600mm lens after the respective multiplication factors have been applied.
The Olympus setup weighs 1.2kg and the Sony weighs 2.4k, exactly twice as much. So would I choose 4/3 knowing what I know now?..........No
