Oooops turns out OK

I took some photos of the blue moon Friday night, then before going out to the Heacham Carnival Sunday I readjusted the shooting mode and the ISO and started photographing a couple of Harley motor cycles, I thought the high shutter speed was because I was using a wide aperture.
Chatting to an acquaintance there I then noticed the only setting I hadn't altered was the EV compensation!!!! I still had minus3 set up from shooting the moon!...Ooops but on processing them last night I thought that the EV compensation gave me some great moody pictures especially when converted to mono.
All pictures processed with Capture NX-D, would have preferred Capture NX2 but the files are not supported in the older version

A happy accident then. The processing has certainly worked on them. Like the tone in one particularly.

Graham, excellent conversions, I prefer the B&W I think it suits the subject better. Images are spoiled a bit with the very prominent water mark.

Re: Oooops turns out OK

Thanks Colin, They air brushed that watermark on the tank especially for me........ the petrol tank one didn't really work in B&W but the sepia brought out more on the badge.
I always watermark all my pictures especially as I put a few on ....shhhhh Facebook and I think the way to stop FB from using photos at THEIR discretion is to put a prominent mark that cannot be cropped out, that one was at 20% unfortunately Elements doesn't seem to have the Layers Blend that PS has so couldn't outline it, but will try to get it better.

Yes Chris, reminded me of when years ago taking pre-wedding pictures of an engaged couple, I use exclusively Fujifilm400 the B&W film but the last roll I used was 100ASA and exposed it at 400, but managed to pull superb 'grainless' photos from the developing.

Re: Oooops turns out OK

I am not a Nikon user but I guess that your camera has the facility to show histograms? I am a very strong advocate of checking them at the beginning and regularly during shoots as they can help eliminate any errors like incorrect settings left over from previous shoots.

As you say in this case you've actually come out of it with new and interesting shots that work so all is far from lost, we can all it a lucky accident but if your equipment allows it then getting in to a good habit of checking the histograms regularly will allow for consistent results and the option to process however you want to later

Re: Oooops turns out OK

I have a policy of always setting my camera to a sensible starting point before any shoot which has generally worked for my DSLR. Recently, I just took a bridge camera with me and assumed because it is very automated I did not bother to check. Very few of the images were usable because I had left it on an odd setting the last time I used it (months previously). As it happens the images were unimportant anyway; I would have taken my DSLR if it was important. It can happen to anyone so I will now always check the start settings of any camera I take out.

Many years ago I did colour darkroom printing and left the last print in the Bleach/fix while I started to clear up. After a while, I realised that I had left the print for many times the correct period and it looked odd. The next day when I viewed the print of an attractive blonde model, I noticed it had a golden glow caused by the excess processing. I then used it in a competition which it won so rescuing "failures" can work.

Re: Oooops turns out OK

Thanks Steve, yes I think at times with these 'computerised' cameras now we forget how much you can actually do or show when out 'in the field', I must get in the habit of looking at that, a few months ago Graham (Dabhand) suggested to me about checking the battery condition, which is something I knew about but never did, so point taken on the Histograms.

Yes Dave leaving the bungalow in a hurry I hadn't checked the settings this time as I don't or hadn't used the EV compensation often, but now 'retired' it's like going back to school sitting there reading the manual on a specific operation of the camera.

It still happens to me, I'll go out to shoot birds or squirrels and my shutter will occasionally drag, occasionally go very fast. yep, left on 5 exposure bracketing from shooting HDR..

Does not happen as often but more often than I'd like to admit
