Panasonic RW2 files

Hi.. my first post. Recently got a panasonic FZ38. Took it on hols, when I got back and downloaded pics onto PC (Windows7) some of them were jpeg and viewable while others were RW2 and not! They are not random but in distinct groups.... 5 jpeg, 10 rw, 24 jpeg, 11 rw etc. etc. Now I am pretty amature and all I used were the auto setting and the likes of landscape, portrait etc... nothing more complex. SO I have two questions;
1) Can anyone tell me why this would happen?

and

2) How can I convert the rw files to jpeg.... so I can see my photos!?

thanks in advance for helping

Re: Panasonic RW2 files

In the absence of one of the more knowledgeable members on here, I think maybe you have selected the option to shoot in both jpeg and RAW. Check your manual and you should find an option in the menu to select just jpeg or RAW.
To convert RAW to jpeg: unless you have the option in the software provided with your camera, you will need to install a software program such as Adobe Lightroom 3. This will also allow you to process your photos. I hope this helps but I am pretty sure someone else will be along soon with better advice

Welcome to Pixalo Tea

Revngo is probably right - some cameras have the option to shoot in different formats - sometines in two different formats at the same time. As said, you should be able to select the files in the menu.

Try downloading the Fastone Image Viewer. It is free (although you will be asked if you want to make a voluntary contribution) and it works like an explorer window where you can select a folder of pictures. It also allows some editing functions and has a great slideshow as well as stacks of other things too. You can save the RAW files in different formats too I think.

You might well find that the RAW files do duplicate the jpegs you have in which case you can either delete them or use them as a master file for storage. You can save and convert them to jpegs as many times as you want.

Re: Panasonic RW2 files

thanks for that... one thing I have worked out is that photos taken pure auto are in jpeg... it's when you change to use one of the other pre-set programs like landscape or micro that it seems to switch to raw... what I can't work out is how to stop that happening! More work needed on the online guide I think!

Re: Panasonic RW2 files

Most cameras will only use jpegs when full auto is selected, so if you have tried different modes those shots will be the ones saved in RAW format.

Sounds like you will need to delve into the menu to change the file type to jpeg. However, you might eventually find yourself returning to RAW as it is a much more controllable and forgiving format as you can change just about everything after you have taken the picture - including the exposure!

Re: Panasonic RW2 files

I've just been to the Panasonic Web page and had a quick look through the Manual for your Camera.

In the Menu you should find the settings for the picture quality ie Fine, Standard, RAW, RAW+JPEG. You may find that it is set to RAW+JPEG, if you change this to fine or standard it should hopefully solve your problem.

I think the Disk supplied with the camera will have the full manual in PDF format making it easier to read or you can download it from the Panasonic web page.

You should also find on the disk a program that will allow you to view the RAW files.

Re: Panasonic RW2 files

thanks... found that..... once I changed it on one program... it seems now to have changed it on all... so that suits me at present. One problem the raw files creat is that when I connect the camera to my computer.... asks me if I want to down load.. I do but only the jpeg files download on to the computer.. it seems to miss the raw files?

Not as far as I know. The Faststone Viewer is an independent program. In XP Microsoft used to have a plug-in that enabled RAW files to display in folders, but I don't know if there is anything available for Windows 7.

I think you can batch convert to jpeg or tiff in Faststone and save the jpegs into a folder in my pictures though.
