Pentax *istD shutter frozen

My old istD (given to a relative) has developed a fault. The camera appears to work OK (metering, autofocus, etc.) but when the shutter is fired, the mirror lifts but the shutter doesn't operate. The main batteries are OK but the backup battery (lithium cell) has never been changed and the camera is over 5 years old (it still registers 3V on a voltmeter but I can't test the current delivery). Before I venture out to try and find a replacement, does anyone know if the failure of this battery can knock out the shutter operation, since it is related to timing, i.e. the clock setting?

John

Re: Pentax *istD shutter frozen

Can't answer your question directly, but I always thought that the lithium batteries were only there to keep things like the clock going and perhaps to retain recent/last settings like ISO and preferences in the memory when the camera is turned off.

Would not think it would have any bearing on the shutter, but worth checking out as I don't know for sure.

Rang Pentax and they advised that it is not the lithium battery. Looks like an expensive repair or a new camera! I would advise the latter.

Decided to reload the firmware and, lo and behold, the camera now functions OK. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Pentax *istD shutter frozen

Firmware? Interesting. Just don't send it to Pentax NZ for repair...

Just a question - re the K10. I've got the istDS and am looking at either the K20 or K10. There were some changes between the two models and I just wonder what your experience has been with the K10 over the istD? I love the colour from my DS and hoping to get the same from either the K20 or K10.

Hope you don't mind me asking? Or hijacking your thread?

I did contact Pentax UK and they didn't suggest anything other than send it back to them. Being in computers, I thought reloading the firmware was worth a go and it worked!

As to the comparison between the istD (I'm not sure how much the istDS differs from the istD) and K10D - the main difference, apart from the greater pixel count, is in its user friendliness (I understand the K20D is very similar). In use, it is much more programmable to your own needs an example being the ability to programme the e-dials on the front and rear. For instance, when I am in Av mode I can programme the front dial to provide EV compensation which suits my particular requirements. Obviously, there are additional features such as the Shake Reduction, a much large rear LCD screen, sensor cleaning, etc., and the electronics function much faster, e.g. when viewing images and when downloading to computer (USB2 compatible). Also, the Fn button comes in very handy at times for quick access to self-times, flash, etc..

The only thing I miss is the ability to shoot in TIFF but, for general use, I find the JPEGs perfectly good enough unless it is something special. You can always press the RAW button to obtain RAW plus JPEG!

The camera feels more substantial and handles really well! In short, I am very happy with it! As to the results, the two cameras have very similar colour rendition.

Hope that this helps!

John

Thanks John, thats good to know.

I'm thinking I should go with the K20. I've got lenses etc and there is a kit with a 16-45 which I don't have so may go with that one...

I think that that is a good decision. With having a K10D, there weren't sufficient improvements to warrant an upgrade, especially since I liked the camera and there was a considerable cost element. So I skipped the K20D and will think about the next one in the series that everyone keeps talking about. Whether it is worth your waiting (rumours are an announcement in May) is up to you! There is always the possibility that with a new camera announced, prices on the 20D will fall somewhat! Just purchased a 300 DA* which is superb!

Glad to be of assistance.

Excellent - that justifies the purchase as "birthday present"...

Whether they release another or not I need to upgrade so that does seem the way to go. Tho dropping the price would be nice!!

Re: Pentax *istD shutter frozen

I've seen rumours of a K7D using the same sensor as the K20, but with 5 frames per sec, 6400 ISO, better metering and focus, HD video, liveview and other improvements too.

Suggested announcement date is 21st May.

I've also seen rumours of two new pentax dSLRs being released, not one.

I just did a quick search on the K7 - interesting reading. Got to love rumours... Will have to wait and see if anything comes of it all.

The latest news is that, during a photo session today, the user accidentally pressed the flash button on the top plate a number of time after which the camera went into the frozen shutter mode again. Since the flash appeared to have been involved in the earlier incident, I suggested firing a flash shot off, which she did, and the shutter worked again. I assume therefore that the camera was waiting for some sort of flash complete message before completing the exposure but could not get it because the flash was not raised and could not fire. However, pressing the flash button again did not cause the fault to recur, so something maybe amiss. Will keep you posted!

Re: Pentax *istD shutter frozen

That is odd. My DS made a loud bang years ago then wouldn't power on.

After a lengthy process (see a very old thread on that debacle!) I got the camera back from repair and since then its been fine. The cause of the problem was apparently a loose screw damaging the main circuit board.

Pentax replaced the board but they claim the screw vibrated loose during regular use. From memory I had been using a flash unit prior to the big bang... Just a thought?

Tho strongly recommend not sending it down here for repair - LOL. They disabled some of the controls when they put the body back together... Very helpful.
