Photo editing prices? HELP!

I am a College student currently working for a local commercial/advertising studio as an assistant/intern. I was just asked to assist a wedding photographer in editing pictures that she has taken, since she is about to get into her busy season.
I was just wondering how I should base my pay.
I would be editing pictures from weddings, skimming through the pictures, editing here and there...nothing to major, I dont believe.

I am just stuck on what to charge.
She is a business partner working with the studio.
I am just lost when it comes to a price to charge per hour.
I was thinking about 10/hr.
It would be in trade, so I am not going to charge around the 60/hr I normally would.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Photo editing prices? HELP!

£60 an hour............ am i confused or just not reading this rightly, The studio you work for is asking you to help edit some pics.......... surely u get paid by them to work?

i personally wouldn't dream of charging £60 an hour for anything! especially not basic editing.

Welcome to pixalo

If you are doing the work within the normal time you would be working for the studio I don't think you can charge anything as you would already be being paid for your time and work. If however it is just that you have met this contact through the studio and plan on doing the work outside your studio hours then you can bet that the photographer expects you to charge a similar hourly rate for your time as you would get from the studio itself.

If you value your skills higher than that then you will probably need to justify why the studio gets your services for less than the the photographer, especially if your studio work covers image editing etc.. This may or may not be difficult for you depending on what the scope of work is during your 'normal studio' job.

Hope that helps

Re: Photo editing prices? HELP!

Thank you Steve.
Im sorry that I was not clear.
This work would not be affiliated with the studio, it was just a contact I met through the studio.

Re: Photo editing prices? HELP!

Has she mentioned what she wants to pay? most will offer you a set amount per job. However if not tell her your normal rate and haggle if needs be. Hope that helps .

Re: Photo editing prices? HELP!

It would help if we knew what country you were in. Are you talking dollars or pounds?

If you are currently an 'intern' (USA, I guess?) then you shouldn't take on external work without expecting to upset the photographer you're supposed to be working for. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, though.

Look upon it as good experience, but don't overcharge. If you're not depending on it for a living, a rate of around $20 or £15 an hour sounds about right.

Good luck!

Re: Photo editing prices? HELP!

To be honest she would have already have got a budget worked out, so does not matter what you would like to charge she would have already got an rate sorted for you if she really is professional. So I would ask her what she is anticipating to pay you.

Re: Photo editing prices? HELP!

I agree with Hoffy - going rate in the UK is about £50 per hour upwards for a full time editor - base your calculations on where you want to fit in and what other trades you get in return. But don't under sell your services - especially if you are good at what you do
