Photo Light Tent

Hi,

Just seen this on ebay - Photo Studio - 32" Light Tent, Continuous Lighting UK - does this seem a good deal? Looking to use it purely for macro and photos for ebay. I've seen the 50cm with backdrops for about 23.00 but have no idea of the lighting costs if bought separately. I presume the backdrops can be purchased separately also.

Any advice or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ian

Re: Photo Light Tent

I have no idea how much the lights would cost but over here, 5100K bulbs like that run about 7 each. However 5100K is not such an issue with Digital cameras anymore since WB is easy to set up for whatever lights you use. The tripods look a bit limiting, quite often with a light tent you also want overhead lighting. I think I probably have the same tent 80CM? Which came with a few backgrounds for not much money at all. I must admit I don't do much Macro so am ashamed to say I use use a few really cheap lights from Ikea with it.

Re: Photo Light Tent

I wouldn't be paying 60 for it.....I bought THIS from Maplins now only 9.99 + 2.99 P&P. It isn't set up correctly in the pic......The wife also has a couple of lamps with moveable arms with daylight bulbs in for Needle Craft work I sometimes borrow and can be had for about 5 - 10 each.
smaller than the one you linked to at only 40cm but a lot cheaper and folds up nice and flat like a folder.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yep, quite like the look of that. Only thing I'm concerned about is the lighting. I would like to avoid saving a few quid on lamps that turn out to be not up to the job. Any recommendations for budget lamps that would do?

Thanks,

Ian

Re: Photo Light Tent

I've seen a few people that were happy with the cheap builders lamps from somewhere like screwfix. It's something I havn't got around to getting yet myself so I'm kinda in the same boat but the last time I used my tent I just rigged up a couple of desk lamps, the results wern't perfect (fine for ebay though ) but I'm sure this was more down to insufficent lighting and my dodgy technique than anything else!

Re: Photo Light Tent

The lighting you buy will depend a lot on what you intend to photograph. The tungsten halogen lights that can be bought from DIY shops are excellent if continuous lighting that produces heat is suitable for your subjects (and those subjects are static too).

I have a set of 4x500w and 2x150w lamps bought from B+Q and use them for still life setups. They are not as flexible as proper photo lighting but that doesn't stop them being good for the money (about 30 pounds for the lot, I seem to remember it cost more for the additional cable!!).

With this type of light in mind, I agree that the complete lights and stands sold for builders is a good bet for the money. Two or three of those should cover most things. The floor standing units you show are good for background lighting, the 500w is probably more flexible (you can always reduce light intensity but often struggle to get more light).

With patience you can also use these lights for model work, heck the Hollywood greats all used tungsten lights for those fabulously lit portraits of the film stars.

I personally love tungsten lights, much better control than is possible with electronic flash. And you get what you see which is NOT the case with flash!

Go for it!

Les

Re: Photo Light Tent

Thanks very much for your advice Les.

Now seen this and at 30.00 seems a bargain, doesn't mention how powerful the lights are though.

I'm not too sure about this one. Looking at the scale of it using the camera as a guide, the light looks like it is only about 30-40mm wide and the word 'mini' appears in the ad. The tent is only around 15" square.

They also don't say what power the lights are so i'd be cautious.

I think the Maplins tent with a couple of desk lamps would be a better bet personally.
