Photo Organiser

Hello again.
I have been off the scene for a while but have now bought an iMac. I replaced my PS Elements software with the app on the iMac, not realising that it did not contain an organiser. I would like to pick your collective brains for your recommendations for a good organiser. I am trying to use iPhoto, but frankly it doesn't seem very intuitive!! Any suggestions?

Re: Photo Organiser

I'm not sure what you want here - surely you are the organiser? Is it software that will give you a directory view of images or the facility to add tags, keywords etc and do some editing? Also, how much are you willing to pay or do you need freeware?

I'm not well up on other apps for a Mac but, in your shoes, I would buy Lightroom 4, a steal at 103.88. HTH.

Re: Photo Organiser

I use digikam which is generally available for KDE x-window manager for Linux. It is also available for Windows and Mac. I have no experience of iPhoto but have read several requests about porting the iPhoto workflow to digikam so I guess it will not be too painful. Digikam is available for free download. It is open source software, with regular forum activity, so it is not a dead project.

At the touch of a button (very nearly), it will export directly to most Internet photo library / social websites, Pixalo (vBulletin) is not included yet I think. It will also export to your iPod.

You can use various RAW file processing.

It is aware of and displays every image file format that I use, including photoshop, so you always have a view of every picture. It has its own picture processing which I find faster than things like Gimp for simple tasks such as perspective adjustment, and other 'whole' picture tasks. To work on individual areas you need to pass the image to another program such as Gimp or Photoshop. All of this can be handled from digikam.

It has image tagging rather like a directory structure but held in the database, which I find very intuitive. The search recall is fairly fast, but my database is not that large as I only keep anything that gets one of the 5 star ratings.

I generally find it intuitive, but then I'm a Linux user and so able to accept and work with some of the 'Linux type' quirks that others might find irksome. As yet I have not had to resort to writing any scripts for work flow. It is not a MAc product and so total integration may be a problem, but Mac is built around Linux so I it may just play the way you want.

Re: Photo Organiser

Not sure what version of PS Elements you have but version 8 came with Bridge for organising images and version 9 onwards has an on board organiser

Re: Photo Organiser

Just as grease_spot, I can also recommend digikam. It is a powerful organizer and you can also import and process RAW data (I believe it uses the dcraw library).

Another open source application that I can really recommend is darktable (I actually use this in my workflow). It is a project akin to lightroom, so it will work in a similar fashion. You can do RAW or other image processing and the filters/plugins seem quite good and intuitive. The organization can be done in albums and images rated and colour coded. It is under continuous development, and hence a little unstable from time to time, but worth a try nonetheless.
It is mainly developed for Linux, but there's an OSX version, which you can download from their website.
