Photographer ID card

I don't know if anybody ever came across this strange problem which I face in my part of the world many places I visit with the lens... I found my access is restricted due to some reason or the other... whereas press people are enjoying the privilege (they have an id which read PRESS in boldest font, and voila... no question asked). I understand the security issue in some high security zone, but in general places also many times I found myself trailing behind some press photographers where I have the option to shoot only the big backpack with KATA, Lowepro or some other name on it

My question is being an amateur photographer.... do I have any option to have any credential in the form of any id so that state officials may believe that I am shooting some pictures only for the sheer pleasure of it not to make any strategic map to bomb the place.. do anybody know any organisation, institution or anybody who can issue an id card to an amateur photographer after properly verifying his credential and all...

Re: Photographer ID card

It's not s strange problem, we have the same situation here, usually a Catch 22 - you need a Press card to photograph a shoot but you need the shoot to get a press card See if you can get a commission for a local mag, paper, club etc, even if for free, then ask them for a letter which, hopefully, might get you the card. Good luck.

Oh yes....there are some good articles in here, by members, about press and agency shooting. have a search or a browse.

Re: Photographer ID card

@ Stefano.... the problem is, I being a government employee forbidden to take any assignment on professional basis with any organisation.... even if without a consideration... that's why I am looking for any non-profitable organisation.... I came across this nikondp.com, have you heard of it? It seems that they issue ids... actually its only a card with a photo that reads "photographer"... actually what I noticed officials usually not look deep in an id as long as it is there with you... one time I flashed my employee id to get access

Re: Photographer ID card

I am purely an amateur and carry an ID card issued by Federation Internationale de L'Art Photographique which is the international federation of Photographic Art. FIAP will be well known to Club photographers around the world though probably largely unknown to others. My ID card has my name, nationality, date of birth, FIAP distinction and my photograph. It also has a message in English and French urging officials to recognise that I am an amateur photographer and that they extend all facilities to me. It cost me £60 to get the ID card which was a compulsory part of obtaining a distinction.

I do not yet know whether it will make any difference. I always carry the card with me (since March) but have not yet been refused any cooperation in that time so have yet to use it. I have serious doubts that it will make any difference but you never know.

Dave

Re: Photographer ID card

Firstly, I am not recommending this as an easy way to get a card and it was a bi-product of gaining a distinction. It is possible that you could just register and get a card but you will have to contact FIAP.

La FIAP : Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique

However, the first thing is that you need to be a member of a camera club which through your national organisation is affiliated to FIAP. Most UK Clubs are and I would think that this is fairly widespread throughout the world. For my distinction I had to enter many international Competitions over 4 years and gain a minimum number of acceptances. There is also a requirement to have entered a minimum number of different competitions and in a minimum number of countries. I also had to obtain an international award. They have recently reduced the criteria and you can now achieve this in 1 year. I would only recommend pursuing this if you want to gain the international distinctions.

Re: Photographer ID card

@Dave.....And you actually qualified to get the membership...my god... actually I also found out that one photography club in India has got the affiliation of FIAP, I am trying to contact them.... but really I didn't (at least at this stage) looking for that kind of membership, it may come in the future.... but not now.... I was inquiring about simple association with any organisation or group or something who can give me an id to flash it when required just to gain access.
