Photographic Awards

I'm curious about all the different types of awards professional photographers can achieve like FRPS FIAP etc

How do people achieve these awards? Are they competitions or what?

I'm sure a few people on here have achieved them before!

i never expect to see one but wouldn't mind knowing how they work!!

thanks,
Steve

Re: Photographic Awards

Hi there, a good starting point could be The Royal Photographic Society. I actually went along to a local Arts collage a few years ago, to learn portraiture, I went on to to a further 5 City & Guilds, 8 in total, It was great because I was introduced to all types of Photography, and in doing so at the time, because I passed 5 with distinctions I was able to enter for the cherished L.R.P.S, great if you want to use letters after your name, as it was I never sent the Money to them, because I was not using Photography as a profession. I suppose I could send now, but It gave me a buzz to think I had achieved something, you can then start the climb up the ladder, some awards, If i,m correct are only available if you work in the Industry, to achieve high levels. they of course show a level of professionalism. say for example you are a Wedding Photographer, even at the level I was at, you had to work for that City & Guilds, Do not be put off though, its great to spend a night out with fellow Photographers, and to learn the History behind Photography sounded boring at the time, but I found myself loving the research side to it, my personal thoughts are If you have it, then go on and widen your horizons, you never no where Photography takes you, there are local clubs, but I found with most of these were quite bad teaching, you must get word of mouth on this, some are a waste of time, but some are very good, depending on the Teachers, I am sure there are lots of people on here who will point you in the right direction, the great thing about Pixalo is everyone at all levels are here to help you, how some find time to do this, I dont know, because the class of some Photographers on here is very high, and they use photography as a profession. It,s great that they can spare time to make this great effort. I,m sure The Royal Society will put you in touch with a very good Collage or Club, as I say I went for a short course, 10 weeks, and stayed for over a year, the people were great, and I learned lots, and went to some great exhibitions, and In doing so, learned a lot, ex; a great picture is not always a clear picture, I went to a very contraverseial Exhibition of sally mann, it was a great learning curve, and I was hooked big time, It changed my way of viewing images, and the way I take pictures, I hope you find what your looking for and look forward to seeing you progress.

Hope I have been of some help.
PS after looking at your Gallery, I cant believe your final comment I never expect to see one, are you kidding me, your Photography looks excellent!

Re: Photographic Awards

Sorry to disagree but in my opinion the worst is the RPS, any organisation that charges you for an award then charges you a yearly membership fee, if you then leave you loose your award.

The best place to start is your local camera club, these give you access to the PAGB, BPE & FIAP and are great places for guidance, there is also PSA in America.

PAGB Photographic Alliance of Great Britain
This is the alliance of club in Britain, they run a group of compietitions called the BPE
BPE, British Photographic Exhibitions, BPE exhibitions home page
These are all british based competitions and you gain points for each acceptance you gain in each comp. For each 25 acceptances you gain one BPE point upto a max of 5, I am currently BPE1 which means I have gain 25 or more acceptances. Must admit that a few years agao they were a little easier to get into, but now are becoming very hard.
PAGB also run photographic acreditation, CPAGB, DPAGB, MPAGB. You have to be a member of an affiliated camera club.
FIAP - SUYSWILL3
This is the international competition, in brief you have to gain have a range of levels to achive, in each you have to gain a set amoount of acceptances, with a set amount of point with a set amount of different image in a set amount of differnt countries. This all has to be done in a set time period or longer, but not shorter. I have achieved the requirement in two years, but the time period is 5 years, so I now have to wait 3 years to recieve my award. So in 3 years I can then have EFIAP after my name.
Both BPE and FIAP carry on each comp awards in themselves, so it is not just chasing the main awards and some of the brochures a quite amazing. For me the best of the lot is the Austrian Super Curcuit in May. A little pricey but you would buy the brochure from the shop for the price and it is 4 compitions not one. Last year they had 42000 entries, so getting in there makes you feel great. Got 16 in so happy.
PSA runs along side the FIAP comps.
If you want to go the academic route the city and guild is a good route, then move onto the MA.

What Peter says is right, 50% of clubs in England are boring and dull and this is a shame, I wish there was a way of changing that, maybe if people stop downing clubs and started making an effort with them they may be surprised, when you see what clubs like Smethwich and Arden are doing you know how good clubs can be. Anyway hope that puts the other side.

Re: Photographic Awards

It is one of the oldest going i think, but as hoffy says" its worth looking around, not all camera clubs are bad". as i said, I never gave them my money, but i did get my City & Guilds, its all paper, it does depend on where you are going with your Photography at the end of the day, if its qualifications for a job, then maybe the paper work is required.

Re: Photographic Awards

One thing that both myself and Peter have forgotten to mention, does not matter weather you make you living from photography, you have every letter after your name or what else.

Photography is a passion, a gift and should be fun. If you loose site of that then you should give up. I have seen to many people let courses or comps take over there life and they forgot why they picked up a camera. Learn to run both together.

Re: Photographic Awards

Good remarks, Photography as been with me since i first took a picture of my niece sat between two milk bottles, the bottles were as big as her, and off to the dark room, blackened out room, the smell of chemicals, and no technology at all, then my mother opened the door when i saw my first print, i was hooked, gone are the days of chemicals and now digital arrived, and about 36 years later i still love Photography, along the way i Photographed people like Diana,Mick Jagger,Tony,The queen,David Bowie, etc,
Yet i never entered into journalism because of my social setting at the time, i went into chemical engineering, but still my camera was always with me, photography is a great passion, and now digital arrived, and this medium although it is an instant process, well almost, i still capture the moment with great thought, a picture is taken and is captured forever.

letters after your name dont make you a great Photographer, Photographs do that, i shall take my camera to the grave, and leave behind images that will live forever.

Re: Photographic Awards

Just one thing to add. I am sure some amateur photographers strive to obtain these awards as status symbols but there is much more to it than that. The awards force you to enter competitions and compete with other photographers. You will need to visit exhibitions and generally be more aware of photography around the world. The various assessments are by experienced judges and thus you have to develop and improve to obtain the higher awards. This may not suit everyone but these awards force you to compete and improve and provide a strong motivation to do so.

I am aware that a number of members of this forum do pocess these awards which are always recognised in Camera Clubs but are rarely mentioned on forums.
