Which Photography magazine...

...do you get on a regular basis? And why?

I get DSLR magazine on subscription (a Christmas present) and my birthday is coming up. I'm looking for a magazine that concentrates on techniques and discusses photography layouts or technicalities and compositions and so on, rather than one that has too many equipment reviews. I would rather read stuff that I can learn from and since I have spent all my money on canon lenses, anything with Nikon or Pentax gets completely skipped over. I know that may not be ideal but the cold facts are that I can't afford to sell up everything I have and re-equip myself with Nikon gear so it's not something I'm even the slightest bit interested in. Same goes for the new canon 1D whatever. When I win the lottery I'll reconsider.

Anyway, back on topic. What do you read/buy and why? What makes it so good? What are your likes and dislikes about any particular mag. I'm looking to ask for another subscription to run alongside the DSLR one so I'm looking for suggestions too. One photography mag a month isn't nearly enough .

Re: Which Photography magazine...

Old magazines and books from the 'sixties backwards, seriously!

I find they offer a more varied selection of styles and viewpoints than the current crop and it all seems more relevant to photography, both then and now.

Re: Which Photography magazine...

I don't get any at the moment. I subscribed to Digital Photo for about two and a half years mainly for the coverdisc PS tutorials. The videos were also in the mag, so you did not have to look at the computer to see them. I've found that all magazines (well car, motorcycle and photo mags) repeat themselves over around a two year cycle. When the coverdiscs also started to repeat I cancelled it.

As I've not even flicked through a photo mag for over a year I could not reccomend one.

That's exactly why I cancelled it.

It does have a reviews section; not sure which photo mag doesn't have that.

Would suggest you browse the photo mag's in the stores, then choose the one that best suits you for subscription.

Re: Which Photography magazine...

Get the very occasional photo magazine (usually because someone I know has a photo/article/won a prize) which confirms to me why I don't get photo magazines/books! Much more likely to get New Scientist or Private Eye and I'm a life member of National Geographic - way better use of my time (as well as better photos!)

Re: Which Photography magazine...

I did get Digital Photo for 4 or 5 years and to be fair the editor did try to avoid too many repeats etc. but eventually I found myself bored because there was nothing new so cancelled it. For the last 6 months or so I have been free to choose any photo magazine which looks interesting. I have visited the newsagents about 4 times and bought nothing.

(I see you are...)

For everyone else, if not, ignore this....

PhotoPlus magazine, if you dont mind the link, its here...
PhotoPlus Magazine Subscriptions | Official Site from Future

its a dedicated Canon mag, although non-canon owners could get lots from the info in there.

Its "Blurb" says...
PhotoPlus will help you take better photos, through a mixture of jargon-free guides, essential photographic techniques and no-nonsense Photoshop lessons

And its not a liar...
One regular feature is to team up a complete novice, or intermediate, with a proper professional type, and send them on a days shoot....

It is aimed at all canon owners who have DSLR, it is completely idiot proof in its wording, but it doesnt stick to the easy stuff...
I have kept all back issues since launch, because quite simply, there is stuff in there I didnt understand completely first time around, (Although it was quite informative) and I plan to revisit all of it again when I know more about this camera....
ALL of its techniques can be used by ALL Canon DSLR owners, from my humble 350D up to the latest "Flagship" they launch.

Worth a read through, the video tutorials supplied on disk are worth a watch, and the ideas are quite good.

The magazine also takes regular feedback from its readers, and one of those feedbacks suggested that sticky taping "Freebies" to the front wasnt getting any kudos from the readers.
They will also do features if enough people ask for it, they do cover all Canon news, its a damn good mag.

I agree about the repetition - doesnt matter what mag - I have taken to picking up old books which tal about film but can be readily applied to any photogrpahy practice - practice being the optimal word for me - I dont take nearly enough shots!!
