Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

I'd like to subscribe to a photography magazine but not sure which one. They all have their good points but was wondering which one you'd recommend?

I don't want anything aimed at a professional but something for an amateur that will provide inspiration and not focus too much on in-depth technical reviews.

Re: Which magazine to subscribe to?

I subscribe to Digital Photo magazine. There are always several projects in PP every month which are in the mag and are also video lessons on the coverdisc. These are mostly for PS or Elements, but they usually have a couple for PSP too.

They also have reasonable 'freebies' for a subscription - the current one for an 18 month sign-up is a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW.

I think you ought to get two or three and see which one you like in terms of content and style before making a commitment.

Re: Which magazine to subscribe to?

I agree Digital photo is quite good with the disc etc however the actual mag seems more full of adverts than others. I have bought DP for over 2 years now and the discs make good watching etc.
Also quite handy when u wanna walk into the store and try and get them to price match as the mag contains more adverts etc.
Thing is its more expensive than the others.

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

Not sure if it's the same, but sounds very similar to Graham's, I get Digital Camera, which is also quite good. Of course there are bits that you should just ignore, but I think at your level Angela you would know what those are. Often has a whole pullout booklet on a particular PP topic, and a disc with lessons and sample pics for you to play with on it.

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

I used to subscribe to Digital Photo and thought it was more of a Photoshop based mad. I like Digital Camera now. I think for all of the the articles tend to get repetitive after a year or so. I now buy then individually if there is a specific topic I am interested in. However I would also look at the freebie on offer for the subscription.

If you want a pure photo mag then I guess the ones that stay clear of Photoshop do not have DVD full of PS stuff may suit you better. I cannot help with suggestions for these.

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

What Digital Camera,there's quite a lot of Adobe pictorials from time to time. Also there's a gallery at the back which scores virtually every item ascociated with digital photography. Also there's some interesting reading.
The other mag I find on a random purchase is the Amateur Photographer .It comes out weekly so its very topical. here again AP has lost a lot of its appeal compared to a few years ago.

Most of the Magazines are owned by just two major publishers.!!

Another vote for Practical Photography here. I had a subscription a while ago to take advantage of the free Lowepro bag, it ran out last year but I still purchase it for the odd plane ride... a decent read that dosn't cost a fortune.

Anyone who is a Costco member will be able to buy mags at 20% off. They have a fairly big selection, but don't know if photo mags are included.

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

I get Digital Camera Magazine. I don't get as much out of it as I did when I first subscribed (coupla years ago) but it's good for inspiration + ideas. Like AQ says, it gets a bit repetitive after a year or so, when they start repeating the seasonal topics. I have enjoyed DCM + I learned a lot from it during the 1st year, but I must get round to trying a different mag.

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

Interesting stuff - was considering a year subcription to a photography magazine and was wondering about recommendations. I was toying with Outdoor Photography for a while, but I think Digital Photo or Digital Camera would be the better option for me at the moment. I'll be interested to hear what you choose!

Just to divert a little... I have been subscribing to Digital Photo for a couple of years and have recently started getting the PhotoPlus - Canon Edition (both very good) and was wondering what is the easiest way to catalogue whats on each CD and magazine?

Maybe someone has already done that?

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

I've just bought a CD/DVD case from Sainsbury's for 4.99. It holds 48 CD/DVD's in cardboard sleeves. I've numbered them and just made an Excel index of the contents of each disc to keep in the wallet. I've put the items of interest for me in bold.

I might make a more detailed index if I see the need, but at the moment it works well enough.

When you list the contents out, you can see duplicate things, but sometimes they are using a different technique to get the same result.

Re: Which photography magazine to subscribe to?

</Grumpy ON>

I've given up more or less completely on modern magazines because, despite all the marvellous tools for layout and art, they are so downright ugly.

Photography is all about images, so why can't these people manage decent layout and choose pictures that have some element of inspiration in them? I collect old photo magazines and there is simply no comparison between the rubbish offered today and the sort of thing that was available fifty years ago. Of course, there was rubbish then too but there were also some wonderfull publications like the original Photography, published just before WWII started, or the same magazine's editions from the late 'fifties. What about the Thirtyfive Millimetre magazine from the early 'sixties - a tiny (roughly A5 size) gem?

I suppose that the real reason for the horrible layout, zero value graphics and brain dead typography is desktop publishing. After all, any idiot can press the buttons on a keyboard, so why pay for someone who's actually learned what different typefaces are for and how to balance a page?

If the guys at Pixalo and ten thousand other web sites can produce clean and pleasant layouts, why can't someone do the same on thirty sheets of paper?

</Grumpy OFF>
