Photoshop CS2 guide

Can anyone recommend a book or DVD tutorial for CS2?

I am sure somebody recently recommended a 4 dvd set they had bought but I can't find the post now.

Martin Evenings' book is also good but Scott Kelby's is probably written in a better style.

These 2 are probably the market leaders.

I thought Photoshop CS2 comes with Video Training at least the ones at work did.

no, but you can get the tutorial DVDs by the same means if required

The training video with the real one is pretty poor and only really looks at the new bits. I have the Total training DVDs and can recommend them but they do start from first principles. If the price is a bit step the Adobe Photoshop one-on-one book and single DVD is also by Mr McClelland has 2 hours of video training to acompany the book. I have the CS for digital photographers but haven't upgraded to the CS2 book, its a good read.

To be honest, the tutorial videos that come with Digital Photo magazine are a darned good place to get hints and tips. They have covered all sorts of things over the last few years. I have everyone from at least the last 4 years and they do make a handy reference when I have a student who needs extra help than I can give in the time I get paid for.

And I third the Scott Kelby book: easily the best to read and very clear. He has a wealth of understanding and puts it across very easily.

I find myself agreeing with Rob yet again! The DVD tutorials on the Digital Photo mag are really good.

I've also got three books that I have found useful. They tend to go into a bit more depth than a DVD tutorial.

The Photoshop CS2 book - Scott Kelby. If you can get past the style of writing that he obviously thinks is funny and witty, but I find is anything but, the information and explanations are good.

The Photographer's Guide to Photoshop - Barrie Thomas. Thinnest book of the three, so not a challenge to conquer. Not as in depth as some others, but more an explanation of what everything does. Kind of a better and illustrated handbook. Access to a web-site (not tried yet) for more stuff.

Photoshop CS2 essential skills - Mark Galer and Philip Andrews. Very clearly laid out and this one comes with a CD with images and access to a web-site for more stuff, again not looked at as yet. The book is really clearly laid out and is well structured.

I've not read these books cover to cover, but as I suspect most of us do, I dip into the bits I want to find out about. So, If I had to pick one? Well, the Barrie Thomas book is more what the manual should have been. It explains all of the tools and gives some examples. It is also the cheapest.

The Scott Kelby book makes me cringe when reading it. However, the information is good and he does give suggestions for the various settings.

I'd have to plump for the Photoshop CS2 essential skills - Mark Galer and Philip Andrews. Very clear in the layout and excellent structure and writing.

BUT, do I regret having all three? No I don't. They complement each other, and sometims show different ways of achieving an effect.

I got all of these from Amazon. I think the two thick ones were about £20, and the other was about £12.

Does this qualify to expose a bit more of Dave's bum? I'm not after rep points, I just want to make Dave squirm!

If you already have a basic understanding of the way photoshop works then i can highly recommend the 'Adobe Photoshop CS2 for photographers' book complete with tutorial CD from Martin Evening. I purchased this from a Digital Media Festival that i went to here in Melbourne, but try www.focalpress.com if you can't find it at your local retailer.
As with Rob and a few others, I agree, the CD's that come with Digital Camera are really good value.
