'Places to take Photos' - UK

Hi All -
Recently, my wife and I had a long weekend on the Norfolk Coast (Holt). Whilst we was there, I spent a bit of time search on the internet for places to take photo's. I was expecting to find some sort of database/ collection of place listed somewhere that would literally pave the way!!!

I have to confess that I was searching on an iPhone (small screen) - but I was wondering anyone know of such a site (or a collection of sites) - what would be useful!!

Thanks in Advance... Jay

Re: 'Places to take Photos' - UK

I do my virtual scouting with: -
  • Google Earth (for locations) - enable the Panoramio layer to see other peoples pics of the area (if any) - there's also a Flickr layer available as an addition.
  • The Photographer's Ephemeris (timing and direction of sunset/sunrise)
  • WXTide32 - For tides, I do a lot of seascapes.

Re: 'Places to take Photos' - UK

Learning to read (properly) an OS map is a good approach as well. If you get the detail ones you can work out a surprising amount and I have found any number of good photo spots tucked away in quiet corners that way. If I am on holiday in the UK I always try to get my hands on the relevant map covering the target area.

Re: 'Places to take Photos' - UK

I tend to use:
Word of mouth (usually through the internet)
OS map - paper or Memory Map (which also has a 3D viewer with directional 'light' for looking at likely sunrise/set spots)
Walking passed a spot; used to do a lot of walking, taking the occasional photo and now I set out to walk but take too many photos!

National trust properties are a great point of interest too.

If you want a copy of last years guide I have one somewhere. Even if you don't go to the properties they are normally set in great backgrounds.

Not that helpful but round and about Edinburgh they have little brass markers on the pavement to tell ou where to stand to get a nice picture.

Re: 'Places to take Photos' - UK

Fiona, I haven't decided which part to go to. I'm completely open to suggestion!!!! I fancied having a crack at some landscapes or maybe even castles etc...or lakes....or lochs.... I thought maybe the west side but having never been around scotland except edinburgh, i have no real idea where to go!!!!!!

Hope this helps.........or maybe it doesn't!!

It's probably not illegal per se, but as others have said malls are private property and owners allowed to set their own rules (within limits). That said, if you consult a good lawyer he may be able to formulate an argument about malls being open to the public, etc.

Re: 'Places to take Photos' - UK

damot, i live on the west coast and would recommend a trip up the coast for some good picture opportunities. head from south ayrshire up the coast, maybe a day or two in glasgow, out to the trossachs and up to argyll if time allows. some fantastic scenery (as long as it's not raining!)
