Posing for portraits

Morning guys,

I've had an SLR for a while now, and fancy entering the world of portrait photography.

So armed with my nifty fifty lens and an ad on gumtree I've begun! I took my first shots on Sunday but whilst I got a few good ones I really struggled on the posing front. The guy I was shooting was pretty shy and wasn't very chatty which didn't help but does anyone have any tips on how to go about posing? Simple tips, 5 shots you have to get or even example photos would all be helpful!

Thanks,

Chris

Posing is tricky, cause shy people generally look stiff for most shots. Talk to them, play music they like do something to get them to relax alittle, if not you will only get high school grad type shots out of them.

Re: Posing for portraits

As the guy said this morning on the radio (Radio 4 talking about school photos), his 50 or so 'togs are primarily entertainers in order to get the most out their subjects. Since his company has a turnover of £2m, I'm guessing he's getting something right!

Hi,

Think about What you want, do you have a theme, do some research on the web.
Your lighting is very important so check it with the model or assistant before you shoot.

As already said try and relax your model or get someone who is not shy.

you can Photoshop just about anything except the models expression, look and mood, you really want something out of the model so choose carefully.

Re: Posing for portraits

I always remember the angles rule my teacher used to go on about.

"Angles angles angles!" - direct quote from her.

Loosely translated, if the face is pointing one way the body should be angled slightly differently. Otherwise its too flat. Though don't take it too far. Your subjects wont appreciate holding yoga master poses for more than a minute or so! Try not to let them mirror themselves either. Both arms on the hips etc. There is an excellent resource on the web with a million poses. Will try and see if its in my bookmarks.

Re: Posing for portraits

Dabhand16 hit it square on. The only thing I would stress (which the cited article did mention) would be dynamic lighting (as opposed to flat lighting).
