Predicament..

I've got a family holiday coming up and don't want to be lugging my bag and lenses around.. do I:
a) Buy a smaller bag and take my dslr with just one lens (18-55mm)
or
b) Purchase a cheap-ish compact/ bridge?

Re: Predicament..

I took my D300 grip 18 200vr and a 50mm 1.8 and a CF tripod to Dubai and back. Put the tripod in my case and took the camera bag etc as hand luggage. D300 behaved quite well in 50degrees out in the desert

For the same money as you can buy a cheap bridge camera for you could buy a Sigma or Tamron 18-200 and a small bag/holster to take your camera with it fitted.

Then you won't have to learn a new camera or have different memory cards.

That would not equate to a cheap-ish bridge camera - although probably the best option

Re: Predicament..

I'd love the Tamron but it's about 300 above my budget.. I think I'll just buy a cheap compact.. that way i won't be too fussed about it getting wet or covered in sand etc..
Thanks guys..

Re: Predicament..

I am with Des here. Firstly, you ensure that your destination is a photogenic location and take most your kit with you. I cannot see the point of owning a good camera and lenses if they are not with you when you need them. You might be able to pursuade members of your family to carry some of your kit though I have had little success with this myself. They can be handy if you need a figure in the right place in your landscapes. Seriously, I do leave my tripod behind when going on foreign holidays but take most other kit.

Dave

Re: Predicament..

Would you be happy to do with photo's that are no good quality. Cheapish bridge camera is not giving those nice results as your dslr.

Too be honest, I never go out without my dslr. It goes everywhere with me. Buy a nice backpack which fits your camera with lenses and bobs your uncle Oh and the first thing on my list to take at my holiday is my dslr

Re: Predicament..

Thinking about it, I should be able to fit my camera bag inside my 'normal' hand luggage bag,so..
PANIC OVER!! Nothing more to see here!!
I am still liking the idea of the 18-270 though..

Re: Predicament..

If you are interested in the Tamron 18-270, I posted some sample shots here and also I took these pics with it over the weekend.

Re: Predicament..

I'd get a bag that can take the cam and one lens attached (I have a thinktank digital holster 40, great bag), and do that. Great shot Muscle btw!

Re: Predicament..

LOL the most important question to ask is ARE YOU TRAVELLING WITH KIDS? Is this a family vacation or is this a getaway for you and the mrs? The mrs might let you get away with running off to shoot pictures but if you are travelling with young kids then I suggest you LEAVE THE CAMERA BAG at home and use a point n shoot. No you will not get stunning pictures and you might not even get good pictures, but you will have memories and probably be a big hero to your kids.
If you are travelling with older kids and they don't REALLY want your company anyways and the mrs doesn't mind then load her up and bring the lightest yet sturdy tripod you can find and pack an all purpose lens with you that will give you both reach and width when you need it. Bring your cable release, your filters and plan ahead. What I do when I get such a wonderful opportunity is to start shooting at close to sunset and shoot the whole night until just after sunrise. Then I pack up and head back to the hotel and sleep until it is lunch time and spend the rest of the day with the mrs before I head out again at sunset.
