Which printing service?

Can anyone recommend a good printing service?
At the moment I use Jessops and Photobox but I always feel the prints are quite dark. Is this normal?

Re: Which printing service?

Can't speak from personal experience, but Digital Photo magazine did a review of photo labs a while back and if I can find the issue post the results up. Peak Imaging was in there somewhere, I'm sure,

Regarding your dark prints, what colour space are you embedding in the files? I've used Photobox from time to time, and have not experienced any problems.

Re: Which printing service?

Afraid I'm really really basic. I don't know what 'colour space embedding' means
Is there a tutorial on this, most basic, stuff.
I barely edit files at all!

Re: Which printing service?

Sorry - just to clarify - I take pics and download them. If they look bright enough, I order prints, but they come back much darker than they were on the computer. Should I have done something to them before ordering prints?

Re: Which printing service?

It might be that the monitor is not showing a true representation of the image if it is not calibrated.

You can set the colour space in the camera. sRGB is the one to use for web viewing, Adobe RGB is generally reckoned to be best for printing. However, it is best to check with the printer what colour space they want you to supply your files with.

Editing software usually allows you to change the colour space in the image, and some even allows the monitor to show a proof image with the selected colour space.

Sounds to me like your monitor is set too bright.

This might be of help, but there are lots of other calibraton aids out there

Re: Which printing service?

Thanks for that info Graham. Sounds like you could be right - I will go investigate the calibration and colour space.
I'm using the gimp - I don't think it will let me see a proof but I will go look it up.
Thanks v much!

Simpbow - will check loxley roes out - thanks!
