PROBLEM

OKies this may turn out to be a daft question with a very simple solution, but im mssing it completely.
I use CS2 and when i open Adobe Raw converter and work on my raw images, i save the new image as a tiff before working on it in PS itself. all sounds ok so far??

which it is EXCEPT that when i work on the raw image and save it as a tiff, it also saves the changes to the raw image itself............... I always change the name AND have tried saving in a new location but it doesnt seem to make any difference......
At the moment im having to copy the raw image and work on the copy so i can keep my original file in the original state.......... is it an option i need to check and havent which i cant find or am i doing something wrong altogether?

HELP

Fi

Re: PROBLEM

I'm trying to get my head round this one Fi. I presume you are 'saving as' from the file>save as> and giving the new filename?

I usually make a new sub folder called 'edits' in the main folder to save changed images in, and I then have the original in the main folder and the modified one in the edits sub folder. I tend to put an 'e' in the filename to indicate it is an edited file, a 'b' to indicate there is a border, and 'c' to show complete. Therefore some of my pictures, if they have kept their filenames as issued by the camera could have e,b and c in the filename.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is you are not 'saving as'.

Re: PROBLEM

graham........ i dont have a save as option as such........... i have a save then i get the option to change it to a tiff and where i want to save it. so i change it to tiff and save in a seperate folder.... BUT the RAW image has also been saved with the changes, and this is where the problem is.......... am i doing something so stupidly wrong that i cant see it?

i have just tried saving it thru PS's save as option instead of saving as a tiff in the Raw converter but it STILL saves the changes in the original file!

Re: PROBLEM

Right, I see what you mean now. I have to say I don't save from Bridge, I usually go into PS and save from there.

Looking at Kelby's book on p44, he talks about batch renaming and saving into either the same or different folder. However, if i've read it right, it appears that you can only copy the renamed files into a different folder, thus, presumeably keeping the original folder intact.

Maybe it is your workflow that is causing the problem. Is bridge designed to do anything more than a batch rename and save to a given location?

Re: PROBLEM

i dont use bridge as such just the raw converter and I dont batch rename. when u click the save option in adobe RAW you get a menu that asks you what format you want to save it as and what name and if u want to save it to the same location or a different one. i have tried all options, it doesnt overwrite the RAW file..... the raw file stays as a raw file BUT it has the changes i have done to it.

Re: PROBLEM

Fi...I think I understand. I am not sure exactly what adobe camera raw converter is, but it is part of cs2.

If you open your raw file in bridge, however, you can either Control R or control O to open the raw file in either Camera Raw or Photoshop. Either way, what follows works the same.

After you have saved your tiff file, rather than clicking "done" in the raw converter, click "cancel" and your raw image will be unchanged.

However, I don't understand why you wouldn't want the changes in your raw file as well. You can ALWAYS convert back to the original. That is one of the huge advantages of shooting raw.

Re: PROBLEM

Isn't this all a Bridge thing? Changes made to file have the changes saved in Bridge so that when you view the image it shows those changes.

Sorry, don't use Bridge (only once to confirm I wanted it nowhere near my system!). Have you tried viewing the original RAW in an application other than Bridge/CS?

Re: PROBLEM

Fiona, a quick work around would be to make a separate directory for "RAW originals" and then do a copy of these originals to a directory called "RAW converted".
Then do all your conversion work using and saving the files from the "RAW converted" directory thus keeping your originals untouched

I always do RAW conversions in DxO Pro before going anywhere near CS2

There is no option to convert back. It just cancels all of your raw changes and stays with the original.

Take a raw image and make some terrible changes to it, ie increase the exposure so that a lot is blown, save it as a tiff and then click cancel. If you are using the program I think you are, cancel should be one of 4 buttons in the lower right corner of camera raw. Then look at your raw image in bridge, or whatever you use to view raw, and you should see your original.

Re: PROBLEM

Must admit this would drive me up the wall. I like to see my 'native' RAW and I'm glad to say that the Sigma RAW converter displays unprocessed images.

I then process all my shots as a small(ish) JPG to see what the image might look like (usually 'Auto' set for conversion). I then select the shots and convert RAW to TIFF (and do most post-production at this stage) and then tweak in PS. Resave as edited TIFF and resize/save for web, as appropriate

If you're concerned at changes to the RAW, you could always use Windows Explorer to mark all the original files as Read Only. But still say RAW file is being untouched - it's Bridge/PS saving the edited version

Re: PROBLEM

Fiona, I think Skip is right. The Raw Converter does not actualy change the RAW file but stores the alterations separately. This is rather like using Adjustment Layers in Photoshop; if you switched off all the adjustment layers you will be left with the original image. I use Rawshooter and it stores the settings in a folder RWSettings for each file you convert so, when you go back to the original Raw file, it opens it with these settings. However, you can change these settings at anytime including reverting to the orignal "as taken".

Re: PROBLEM

Fi

I think everyone is complicating this. Bridge and adobe raw is very easy. Just try doing what I suggested and let me know.

And Dave C is correct. You don't change the actual raw file, just the exif file. That is why you can always go back to the original.
