NO WAY would I like to see "Charities" using MY images in a "Non commercial way"...
Not unless they ask first, and I am able to refuse to charities I do not support.

Re: proposed change in copyright

Parts of what's proposed seem workable, but as SD has pointed out other parts look to be open to abuse.

...A bit more work to be done me thinks.

Re: proposed change in copyright

Further Rant......
Sub Heading,
Quote:
The ing Govt have just legalized theft.....
Non commercial use.....
So what is to stop people going online and searching for an image, then just taking it, even from heavily guarded sites where stock photo's are kept?...

Strikes me, if you can see an image, and want it, you can just take it?....(if you know what you are doing... see below....)
How the hell are people going to be able to advertise images for sale if by doing so those images are open to be just taken anyway, and you cant stop that, because all they have to say is "Non commercial use"..
I am in touch with an American friend who makes a small living by doing Avatar design... they are the one who did my profile pic as a quickie as a thanks for helping them with a small computer problem...
If their work, by this ruling, now is "Free" to be stolen by anyone, thats the end of their job....
A lot of their stuff is free anyway, but some is "For a small donation" based, which helps top up their pension fund.

This is NOT good news for people like myself, who want to start out "selling" some images, but now wont be able to sell anything, 'cos people will just take, 'cos the ing Govt have just legalized theft.....

(Ps... even with the r-click "Save image" disabled, I have software that is able to save what I see.....your computer has to download the image anyway to display it... all you gotta do is know where to look in your temp internet files...why do I have this?.. "Know your enemy"... I beta test for anti-nasty companies, one assignment was "Can you take this image", and, yes I can... I posted it back to them in an email approx half hour after they set the challenge...)

Re: proposed change in copyright

Okay <puts on full body armour and anti-flash visor> I'll go out on a limb here and say this is long over-due.

I'm fed up with having to watch a screen telling me I'm a thief because I've bought a (legitimate) DVD. I also resent the same accusation because I bought a CD and had the temerity to copy it to my iPod.

'Copyright holders' as a class seem to be nasty and stupid. One company had the cheek to threaten me with legal action for showing some screen shots of their software on a web site, when they've been selling code that I wrote for years without acknowledgement!

Bottom line: the world's moved on since an idiot parliament (is there any other kind?) decided to pass emergency legislation to protect "the Pirates of Penzance".

<climbs down into fallout shelter and awaits the bombs>

Re: proposed change in copyright

im on the fence......... i agree a change is over due.............I think it has to be better worded............. the bit where it states that.

""The ipo also considers that making non- commercial use less onerous for consumers.... for example by removing the need to seek permission and make payment for personal use of individual copyright works, would help. however it adds that fair compensation for rights holders would be required.."

Re: proposed change in copyright

I'm not that fussed, to be honest. Images on the internet tend to be treated as public anyway - anything that is significant will be of such a size that it won't be available. I guess it might drive people to only upload say a max of 500 pixels on a side (as you can do a fair amount with a 1,000 px image)

I've had photos paid and unpaid for organisations (both charities and commercial) - the paid were commissioned, so nothing will change there

Having said that, it's very rare that an organisation requires to use a specific individual image and so has to search and search to find the owner/establish ownership. Usually the nearest they'll come to a specific image is a specific subject. So I'm unclear who the changes will actually help - or I'm missing something somewhere!

Re: proposed change in copyright

If the Government want to change it then they will do "by hook or by crook". Nothing that is said or published or submitted will make a damn bit of difference.

All my images on my website have right click disabled.......and now they are all watermarked predominently. If someone wants and un-watermarked image, then they have to pay first.
