Re: Protective filters

There have been many threads on this subject, and the jury is out. Some people advocate using a filter for lens protection, the others say why put another layer between your very expensive lens and the outside world and degrade the image?

If you shoot things like rallying or scrambling where there is a lot of dirt flying around the odds that your camera will catch some of it is quite high. If you only do portraits the odds are a lot less, if not negligable. For general use, you'll have to make the decision.

I've heard of cleaning too often wearing the coating from the lens too.

I am a filter user - all of my lenses have skylights or UVs fitted.

Re: Protective filters

Don't know about degrading the image but i would rather replace a uv filter than the front element of a lens

Re: Protective filters

Honestly the price they charge for filters is SICK! No they are not in my opinion worth their weight in gold - anything BUT. However, when I am shooting outside I do have one on all my lenses. Shop around try to get the lowest price you can find for the filter in your brand that you want/like and don't spend anymore than you must. The lens HOOD is what I would strongly encourage you to buy and USE.
If you plan on selling anyone of your lenses then it is always nice to be able to say I HAVE HAD A FILTER ON THIS LENS SINCE DAY ONE.....in reality don't know enough about filters or care about them enough to know what the big deal to you having a filter on it since day 1 or not.
In studio and for protraits I jus about always shoot naked without a filter.

Re: Protective filters

With a good quality filter you would find it difficult to tell any difference with an image shot without one imo.

I used to have a UV (B+W) filter on all the time but I have started to leave them off.
