Back focusing in the true camera sense is when you focus on a subject and the result is the focus is moved behind the focal point, so the result you get is the focal point is past the point where you wanted it to be and often a slightly out of focus main subject. It was widely accepted that some of the first batches of 10D's suffered from back focusing.
