Question about 'true black & white' photos..

My Nikon D80 changes my photo's to B&W if I choose it in the settings... My friend asked me if it was 'true' b&w.. would it be?

Thanks!

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck...

What does your friend consider true black and white and what do they consider false black and white?

Re: Question about 'true black & white' photos..

Yes - and no! True mono just means having no colour - other than white, black and grey, of course.

Most digital cameras have a setting to take mono photographs, but it is better to take your pictures in colour and the convert them to mono using software.

Why? Because the greyscale the camera will do for you will only have 256 shades. A colour image will have millions of shades, so converting photos in software will result in your image having many more shades (even if it won't have millions like the colour shades) so will be smoother where tones change more subtlely.

If you shoot with the mono settings your camera will be 'throwing away' much of the image.

That's a really good simple explanation, Graham.

Re: Question about 'true black & white' photos..

And there was me thinkin' true black and white required a black and white photographer.

In actual fact, in traditional film stuff it was the colour that was false since the image was first developed as bw just like mono film, so there all you colour togs, eat that!
