Question by police

Yesterday whilst my wife was at the hairdressers I was walking round town doing some street photography after around 30 mins I was sat minding my own business when I was aware a police car pulled up next to me in a pedestrianised area and I was asked if they could have a word they said they had recieved reports that I was taking photographs of children I showed him all the images on the camera and he was happy that I wasn't he said they had to investigate it as a complaint had been made I was asked for my name and address and proof of ID which I gave however I've been advised that I could have refused as I hadn't done anything wrong I was told I was free to go I was clearly followed after I didn't get the camera out again and when shed finished in the hairdressers we came home I just felt I was regarded as guilty foremost and to be honest I was pretty annoyed with the attitude I know they are doing a job I was also asked if I had any convictions or had been arrested before which I haven't quite a lot of interest was drawn to me whilst all this was going on I dare say I will have my "internet watched" if it isn't already if I was taking pictures of children at a swimming pool or similar which I wouldn't I could have understood their actions I also wondered what the outcome would have been if I had some pictures of my grandchildren on the memory card first time I've ever been stopped doing photography and it won't put me off end of the day it's a reflection of the times we live in

Re: Question by police

if a complaint was made they HAVE to by law thoroughly investigate doesnt matter what it is... I was called once by the police at work when a patients husband had reported me cos i wouldnt/couldnt tell him who i was or why i was calling.
Thing is there is NO law against taking pictures of children and as long as they were not inappropriate there would be little they could do anyway.
No you DIDINT have to show them anything they would have had to get a court order if you had refused. BUT if you have done nothing wrong whats so wrong with allowing them to do their job properly after all just thinik if there had been a guy taking inappropriate images of children out there and they DIDINT einvestigate ... well would you want that on your conscience?

I dont actually see the issue or problem.
so you where slightly inconvenienced.... you dont honestly think they are going to put time and effort into watching your internet thats just paranoia. ( not meaning they cant but lets face it they will have bigger fish to fry)

Re: Question by police

funny you said this a young kid in his teen s has been caught using his phone to photograph some young girl in a loo outside a hair dressers shop he put it under the wooden door

Many of the shops in the main street still have out side loo s at the back of the shop

now I am not sure if it was a prank gone wrong but he is up in front of a magistrate today so we shall see

another thing the monthly photo comp had sports and I was tempted to get some image of local kids playing footy but the major concern for me was would I end up the same situation'

Re: Question by police

Doing that he is without doubt doing wrong and should be punished accordingly what annoyed me more than anything there were three people begging in close proximity which i believe is illegal and yet they are just left to it

Re: Question by police

There are many things police tend to have a blind eye to some minor others more serious .

I used to have police radio scanner before they changed over to digital radio and one thing we as outsiders do not realize is how busy the police are

Some are on there way to urgent calls

some like in your case someone may have said some thing so they have go check it out

Now some say traffic police have quota ie so many tickets other do not but they have to watch traffic

I am not defending them sadly in a organization with so many people there is always one or two rotten eggs

but what would life be like with out them interesting situation because there are a lot of people out there who have little or no feels toward your property and would steel it without even thinking about it

Has any one see a American Greed TV show so many conman out there steeling from a few thousand to millions leavening a trail of hurt and betrayal

One advantage of living in the outback is local police have to live in the same town and they are totally different personality to a city cop they do book you but more often you just get a warning

Not quite true...they must record the complaint but there are thousands of complaints which are never investigated at all never mind thoroughly......they haven't the resources. Did you not read about the police whistle blower?

Anyway....I have the same opinion as muscle and, to me, the issue or problem is why should I be inconvenienced, embarassed etc for acting lawfully. This is an old chestnut and I really could let off steam about it, but enough said.

Re: Question by police

Whatever the legal rights and wrongs on the subject, the thought of the possible results of taking an image of a youngster quite often stops a photographer taking an image.
Last weekend at a Roman Army re-enactment I saw a young lad about 6 years old who had been dressed as a Roman Legionnaire, complete with shield, sword, helmet, armour etc. (He was not part of the show).
He looked proud of his outfit and I was thinking of taking a picture, then the thought of others misconception of my motives stopped me from taking it.
Sad, but there it is.

Re: Question by police

Over the weekend I've taken a few images of children whilst covering an event, in each case I asked permission off an adult and was never refused. In an "open" situation I would be wary of including children because of the popular but wrong misconception that it's illegal.
I strongly refute that taking anybody in a public area makes a photographer a pervert, if they don't like being photographed in a public area they shouldn't be making a public display.
But it doesn't end there, take an image on a phone-nobody bats an eyelid, bring out an SLR and your a bad guy.
As regards photographing buildings ect. the authorities should move with the times and get wise to what detail you can obtain on Google Earth and street view and similar sources.
One thing I know, if I was a pervert, I could obtain over the internet plenty of very small disguised cameras for very little cost without having to advertise myself with an SLR

Re: Question by police

lets remember the police dont MAKE the laws. and i was under the impression in scots law that they have to investigate every complaint.

and just as a point i have taken pictures of many children in many events doing many things and never once been stopped or questioned
but if i am then i will happily go along with them

Bloody hell mate, have you not heard of full stops!!!

You seem to be forgetting that when the Police get a report of someone behaving in a suspicious manner, they have no idea whether the person in question is up to no good or not, until they speak to the aforementioned person.

I will put money on it, that if a pervert was walking round your locality taking inappropriate photographs of people, and the Police didnít respond to reports made by the public, you would be the first to complain.

Re: Question by police

What I don't understand about this type of situation which I have heard many times before is that anyone wanting this sort of child picture they just has to buy the local newspaper and there will be dozens of photos taken at the local primary schools taking part in various events etc. and there is not a word about it,
Colin.

Re: Question by police

when I did my diploma in IT systems admin just as they brought in digital cameras , we had several discussions on what effect this will have in society.

Sad thing is much of it is true and things like uploading a image of your self people just do not realize it is there for ever .

I said way back then kids will learn quick and I wonder home many kids out there have found pictures there parents posted on the net as a silly some time in the past

But the sad part is child porn has increased one Roman Catholic Preist in Queensland had a couple to terabytes of images of young boys in his home e few months back , he was said to be part of a large circle of people who swap images over the internet . very sad case

Re: Question by police

what i dont get is what is in a photo....... there is no harm whatsoever in allowing an image ot be take of a child if its inncocent and appropriate, time and again i have heard "i dont want people looking at my children" get a grip keep them covered from head to foot and never let them out the door, folks are way to easily mislead its not an image of a child that is wrong its an inappropriate image of a child thats wrong. someone wants to oggle at a pic of my son then fine go ahead what on earth damage is it doing? its harming NO ONE.... someone wants him to pose in an inappropriate way THEN the **** will hit the fan ( actually hei s 17 now so all control is out of my hands but im referring to when he was younger obvisouly

I dont think child porn has increased just like i dont think child abuse has increased its just easier to find out about it and spread it which is both a good and a bad thing as its easier for both sides of the coin.

Re: Question by police

I have just read local newspaper and it seems there is more to that story it seem he has now been charged with indecent dealings with a minor and as he is 17 a minor no more can be said

I really thing what you said Fiona is true people have been molesting children since the beginning of time it is only now with technology and a different way of looking at it legally more and more has come to light

why a very small percentage of males can look at a child in a sexual way I have no idea I am 60 in March and have nothing in common with teenager and I do not socialize with them and that is how I like it

How the problem can be fixed that is up to the experts to work out how to change a way a person thinks

Re: Question by police

lets be clear on one thing.... it may be predominantly males but in no way is it ONLY males. which tends ot be forgotten and glossed over as if females havent the ability to be as evil.... Yes they absolutely have.

The problem is in this day of no or loose social morals people think they can do what they want and there are no consequences.......

It is not the fact that someone has these urges... and a lot of the time its not really " children" remember one day before their 16th birthday it is child abuse and makes you a paedophile , one day after their 16th birthday makes it legal......... the attraction if thats what you want to call it doesnt turn on or off on a certain date...... these people who this happens to i actually feel a bit sorry for it doesnt make them a paedophile in my eyes just stupid. my ex Bro in law was no paedophile but my sister got pregnant at 15....stupid decisions yep not a paedophile and it was as much her choice as it was his.......... what is really troublesome to me is that fact that not only do they have these urges ( for young kids)....... BUT that they then CHOOSE to act on them.
Ok you can argue that a person cannot help how they feel or what attracts them....... I totally believe that as i think attraction is a primal/ base emotion and you have no control over what attracts you...... but surely to god if you have these urges you HAVE to know its wrong you HAVE to understand you are going to hurt a child if you CHOOSE to act on these urges. There seems to be no thought of consequence and i blame the fact its a me me me society.
