Question re competition entry

The rules say max 600pix wide, does that still stand after the general image size for posting was increased to 800?

Nope the picture sizes for the competition remain the same, so yes it is still 600pix unless you are submitting a panoramic in which case it can be upto 1000pix wide. Remember though that if the staff member handling the comp round thinks that it is not a panoramic, ie you have just cropped an image and submitted it larger to gain more impact, it could end up being disqualified.
