Questions for the experienced photographers

I have a goal that I would like to start a small business doing photography. However, I am a beginner at all the pertinent things that need to be learned. Yes, I can use a point and shoot, but I want to have a heck of a lot more talent than that, and rightly so if I want to do it professionally.

My questions for you are:

How did you learn the skills that you have acquired? Did you take courses, offline or online, or did you do something else?

What was it that made it all click in? Honestly, right now, I am confused. LOL

How long did it take you to acquire the skills and before you got into your profession?

Anything else you can add would be great.

Books you can recommend that may help a confused person like me, etc.?

Re: Questions for the experienced photographers

Speaking as someone who sells the odd pic and takes the odd commission (so most definitely not a pro but I've had experience of most facets):

Learned over the last 4/5 years from online feedback (and offline advice from pro friends). Never taken a course, don't read books (don't even have photo mags) but I do look up the occasional technique online

Still waiting for it to all click but have had moments when I've 'seen' the finished image before I took the shot....... and it all actually worked!

Computers are my profession - still tinkering with photography

Advice I was given was that you need to be prepared to spend 1-2 years subsidising your photographic profession (and life!) working whenever and wherever and then you just might gain a foothold

Definitely worth taking a business course in order to ensure that you have total control of the business

Re: Questions for the experienced photographers

Thank you for your replies.

Where I want to begin is taking portrait of children. I have 3 subjects at home that I can practice on. I am sure this is an attainable goal once I learn the ins and outs of my Sony a350 and about the pertinent things to do with photography.

Unfortunately, just having a hard time figuring out where to start learning and how. Some things are a bit overwhelming.
