Raw processingNeed

Need some good recommendations please.I,ve just found out that my version of Nikons Capture nx (ver1.3.5 ) does not support raw files from my D90. Nikon tell me I need ver 2 with an appropriate update .However, my experience with ver 1.3 has not been a happy one and I am not inclined to pay nearly 90.00 to update to ver 2. Can anybody recommend a good alternative that is compatible with the D90?

Re: Raw processingNeed

If you wait a couple of weeks there will be a public preview of Bibble 5 which supports the D90. Certain features are disabled in the preview, but most are there.

Meanwhile you could try Lightroom 2 which is quite popular, although personally I'm not an Adobe fan. There are many other RAW converters including DxO, Silkypix (no relation!), Capture One, Ufraw, etc. Most of them offer a free trial.

Re: Raw processingNeed

If you just want something to view the files and do some basic stuff try the free version of the Faststone viewer. From that you can open images in your editing program.

Rats! They might update it to allow it to be used with the D90 and other new models.

Try the Nikon ViewNX, it probably came with your camera, if not, it's free. It will convert the nef's using the in camera settings.

Re: Raw processingNeed

If you fancy swimming against the tide, dcraw is the RAW processing engine used by many third-party RAW converters. It is maintained by David Coffin and is Open Source (free). It's not slick or glossy, but it works with just about any camera, and David is very quick with updates.

ufraw is another rather clunky variant that uses the dcraw engine, and again is free.

The GIMP is a quirky but very powerful Open Source image editor, and there are plugins for both dcraw and ufraw that allow you to edit RAW files directly. Not good for RAW workflow or speed, but it does the job.
