Raw vs. Jpg

Hi, i just wanted to ask about RAW image files and why use them instead of Jpg, like what are the advantages and disadvantages with raw files against jpg, i understand that photographers use RAW to alter the image and tweak it better, but what else is can i do with them?

Like i am an amateur to photography editing so should i be using raw, and i know it uses alot of space, so please can someone explain RAW to me?

Re: Raw vs. Jpg

I'd suggest that you stick to jpgs for the moment while you learn about the camera, You will be able to change contrast, colour intensity, sharpening and a couple of other things in camera with jpgs. Most sports photographers will use jpgs as their cameras can process the files quicker and when using a high frame rate it is possible to clog up the system if the camera can't clear the buffer qick enough.

RAW files need a two-stage process as the files have no camera 'enhancements', so jpgs are quicker to process. But in the first stage of RAW processing (often called converting as the files will be converted from RAW to jpg or tiff for any further processing) you can correct the colour balance, exposure, add contrast and sharpening - all after you have taken the shot! Indeed, RAW files will always need some work as if left as shot there are usually flat and look soft.

Most people will not go back to using jpgs once they have gor their heads around RAW.

You need a program that can handle raw files. If you just want to view them you could download the Faststone Image viewer to see them. It is free, but they do ask for a voluntary donation.

Re: Raw vs. Jpg

I believe you have a Canon Liam, if you have the software that goes with it there should be a program on the disc called Digital Photo Professional which will allow you to see the RAW and also to some basic conversions on them if you wish.

Re: Raw vs. Jpg

You could also start here...

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP

That is the add-on to the usual pic viewer that Microbodge sells (XP Version) that allows you to view RAW...

It works for any Canon I know of, most Nickon's, and most other "Known" raw formats...
(As in, VERY new camera's may not be included until m/soft know of the format...)

Re: Raw vs. Jpg

Oh, so and dabhand, do you mean i can do that on the camera, cause the raw files i have now are on my computer not my camera, as i used my brothers camera whilst he was down and he sent me the raw files, i would of been using my camera had i not been a groomsmen and didnt plan to take many photos.

Thanks, Liam

Re: Raw vs. Jpg

No. RAW files are just that - raw images with nothing added from the camera. You will need software and a computer to make the changes.

They are larger files, and contain more information.
In that way, they are better for manipulation, I find you get better results from resizing the pictures if you want to zoom in and only use part of the photo.
I also find you get a sharper image.

It is all down to personal choice, but, say for instance I bought a 10 mega pixel camera for the reason I wanted LARGE images, so, by that chalk, why would I buy that camera if I was happy with using a 7 meg image from the JPG output?...

The RAW image is the best picture the camera can take, and it has NOT been altered in any way by compression to create a JPG image.
