Ready For RAW

hi
i have been shooting mostly with jpeg for a quick show and tell and quick photo upload for friends and so on..
but now i think i want to start using PS to muck around more and experiment since Scott kelby's book is on its way and have recently added more GB to my pc to handle bigger size photos.
but im not sure how to start.... do i need a program for RAW files? and how do i convert photos and so on? any threads that might be helpful or advice
thanks in advance

Re: Ready For RAW

You need a RAW converter, or an image editor that can read RAW files. Some of the options are...

1. Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) which will have come with your 400D.

2. Photoshop + Adobe Camera RAW (ACR).

3. Adobe Lightroom (now on version 2.3).

4. Apple Aperture (Mac only).

5. The GIMP + UFRaw plugin (all free!).

6. One of the many non-free third-party RAW converters - e.g. Bibble, Capture 1, Silkypix, DxO, etc.

Probably best to play with DPP and maybe Photoshop/ACR first if you already have these. Shooting RAW is a really good idea as it gives you more scope for tonal/colour adjustments without affecting the quality. Many RAW converters are non-destructive - they don't change the original RAW file, and store the editing data in a separate 'sidecar' file and/or a database.

Re: Ready For RAW

Another option is to use Faststone viewer (free download) to view the files and you can send them to your image editor from it. However, you cannot do much in terms of editing - it is really only an image viewer so you do not have the advantage of changing the settings as you would in some of the apps mentioned by Silkstone.

Re: Ready For RAW

Re: Ready For RAW

You can do sharpening and noise reduction in most image editors (and RAW converters). Possibly the best noise reduction application is Noise Ninja which is available as a stand-alone application or as a plug-in to some editors. It is also included with Bibble, although I'm reluctant to recommend Bibble right now as it is in limbo between old and new versions.

Re: Ready For RAW

Well if you truly do have the time, then I suggest you sit down for a couple of days and work through Scott's book with PS. Once you have done that there are few things that you would not know how to do or know how to figure out how to do in PS. If you can get a good handle on PS there aren't much out there that you cannot do with PS. Programs such as Lightroom are great but in many sense they are just doing what PS does but a little faster and less transparent. I don't always work in RAW, though that is changing now as many programs are allowing me to work with RAW files faster, and easier. Working in Jpeg alone is not a bad idea and I think many people have worked iwth Jpeg alone for years. It all depends on needs and your workflow.
However, if you follow a few of the threads on here you will find that as awesome as PS is, after awhile you MIGHT find that it is best to get as much of your artist control from "in camera" then with post production.

If the book you have ordered is Scott Kelby's Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter) (Paperback) then it will tell you everything you need to know, from importing files into bridge, developing them in ACR and further processing in CS3.

Re: Ready For RAW

When it comes to Scott's books. I would purchase his CS2 book and learn the basics and then go to the library to see what is new in the two later versions. I have seen the Cs3 book and not a Cs4 book yet but I doubt they are THAT different. Scott's books are great but there are alot of overlap as with many photography books

Re: Ready For RAW

Once you've made the (non-destructive) edits to the RAW file, you can 'export' to whatever format you want - JPEG, TIFF, PSD, etc. That won't effect the original RAW file of course, and you can then carry out further processing on the exported file if you wish.

Re: Ready For RAW

Scott Kelby's book has arrived and was a little disappointed that a lot of it has to do with photo correction. I was under the impression it was going to have "creating cool and funky effects" such as "vintage look" or how to create the "circus look" hrmmms maybe I'm after a completely different book... but awell there's still a lot of cool things to try from the book anyway....

Re: Ready For RAW

Get to know how to produce good 'conventional' pictures first, then as you gain experience you will know how to create the pictures you mention.

Take a look at 'How to Cheat in Photoshop' by Steve Caplin. This deals with what are essentially montages, but the techniques can be used in any sort of processing. You might find it closer to what you want.

Many applications have different styles built in, or you can get plug-ins for Photoshop. However most of these pre-sets give you little control over the final result unless you get one of the more expensive specialised effect applications and you will not learn how to create these effects if you just push a button.

Re: Ready For RAW

Yeah I'm trying to master everything in the book atm but some will be hardly used since I don't have photos with "red eyes" or "over exposure compensation" and all the other photo correction techniques but im loving the different techniques for monochrome and photo stitching, so i guess i just want to jump straight into fun cool stuff of editing and I'm really liking it more and more every time i see it

would you be kind enough to mention an application that you know that might do what I'm after whilst I do my own research
Cheers Dabhand!
