Realistic lens price..

Dear all,

I have a Nikkor AF-S 55-200 f/4~5.6G ED that I'm thinking of ebaying to fund a Nikon AF-S Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR Lens as I could really do with the extra length (I know someone already made the gag earlier but I can't think of a better way of phrasing it!) The lens came as part of a kit that I bought back in August and is in pristine condition. What's a realistic price I could expect it to fetch? I've been keeping an eye on ebay for examples but none have turned up.

Many thanks,

Ian

Re: Realistic lens price..

Hi Ian,

I have just checked the 'completed listings' on ebay that show all items with that description that have been listed before. There have been 11 lenses with a 'Buy-it-Now' price of 69.99 which all appear to have been listed by the same person. 6 of the 11 lenses sold. My experience of ebay is that if something is listed as an auction and two or more bidders get locked into battle they will pay upto and sometimes above the Buy-it-Now price.

Good Luck,

Richard

Re: Realistic lens price..

I'm also out to get some new lenses at the mo' and considered the 70-300 as the only Nikkor zoom available which goes up to 300mm. 200mm just doesn't seem to cut it - I know ppl try to uplift DSLR users by saying the focal length is longer than on 35mm format, but never having used film this means diddley squat to me!

Anyway, I see you have this lens OP. The reviews I've read all say how fab it is, except a bit soft at the long end, which defeats the object as far as I'm concerned + doesn't make it worthwhile after all, as I intend to also get the 18-200mm f/3.5 as an all-purpose zoom, i.e. buy the 70-300 just for an extra 100mm which is gonna be soft anyway

What do you think of it?

PS Sorry to hijack your thread Jag, but I think you got the answer you were after, and the 70-300 is still on topic here, I think?

The only reason I don't post on a daily basis about just how mind bogglingly poop it is is coz I got it for 48 (Nikon staff discount). And at that price it's a bargain.

As u say, it's soft over 200mm although with mine if I use F11 it's not nearly so bad. Because it's so light, on the tripod the mirror slap is enough to cause blurring - especially at slow shutter speeds - ie when you use a tripod :/

The focus speed is appauling and unless you've got good contrast in your subject it'll hunt all day.

When focussing it's very noisy so you're gonna scare the wildlife in a 3 mile area into thinking a thermonuclear war has started!

Since my review where I gave it 6/10 I've seen better lenses first hand and have to say, it really doesn't deserve 6. Probably 4 is more accurate and only then because of the price I paid.

That said, it can work. This is hand held @ 300mm and even the full size version is absolutely fine. 1/400th of a second tho so you certainly need good light at F11...

Be aware there's actually 3 70-300mm lenses. Only one of em is worth looking at: -
  • 70-300 f/4-5.6 G - Mine and poop
  • 70-300 f/4-5.6D ED - Supposedly exactly the same as the one above except it has a metal mount. The ED moniker is apparently just "marketing"
  • 70-300 f4.5-5.6 G VR - This is the one, money permitting, to get. Just need to find myself 237 to get one.

Re: Realistic lens price..

Thanks OP. Actually it is the latest VR version I was eyeing; didn't see that yours is the old version

The reviews on the new VR one say it's better than previous versions, but still soft @ 300mm.

I'll think about this one for a bit longer. However that's a pretty impressive Puffin you shot there

Ah right. Well my thumbs up for the VR is just based on Ken Rockwells comments. I'm sure it is soft at 300 compared to 200 but I'm betting it's not nearly as bad as the G version (mine).

And mind these issues only appear when it's wide open. With the advantage of VR you could probably handhold at near enuff 1/60th. Also with the extra weight it'd probably cure the vibration issue anyway.

thanks. less impressive was the 100+ shots at trying to get them in flight. They move fast and the G lens is slooooo.

However, according to Ken that isn't an issue with the VR you are looking at.

I'd paste the link to his review but you know how it is I can PM u it if u want.

Re: Realistic lens price..

I saw Ken Rockwell's review. The more reviews I read on Ken Rockwell's site, the more I think his site is a joke ... He starts off saying how he renders the 70-300 absolutely useless + unnecessary + a waste of money because he dotes on his 18-200 ... but then as his review unfolds every point he compares the two lenses he rates the 70-300 far superior (or words to that effect) to the 80-200 And some points he makes in his reviews of lenses that I own I know to be just plain rubbish. Anyway, some of his reviews are useful ... except I never know whether to rely on them or not

If I remember the reviews rightly, the VR is also a G lens, which doesn't faze me. (Ken Rockwell rants throughout his site about what a waste of time G lenses are, but again I'm not bothered so much as film users might be )

I'll try + get some feedback on the 70-300 VR before deciding ... on one hand it doesn't cost the earth to give it a go, but on the other hand I'm still not convinced the 300mm reach will be good enough to warrant a few hundred quid, if it's not going to produce sharp pic's.

Any comments from anyone who has used the new 70-300 VR lens would be helpful

Re: Realistic lens price..

Another thought on the reviews saying it's soft at 300mm: It occurs to me that because it's VR everyone is just hand-holding; but I'm wondering if it's nice + sharp on a tripod

Re: Realistic lens price..

It's the limitation of optics Charlotte. Quite often with zooms there are limitations nearer the extreme ends of focal range, especially it seems with telephoto ranges over 200mm.

Re: Realistic lens price..

Thanks for the pointer Dave, it could be why Nikon hasn't produced much in the way of 300mm zoom range; although one wonders why Canon + Sigma do, and how their 300mm zooms fare

Re: Realistic lens price..

Looking at the photozone data, I'd say it does pretty well at all focal lengths. They mention CA and the edge MTF at 300 is not great wide open but I got to say I wouldn't have expected it to perform so well apart from this.

Re: Realistic lens price..

Yeah I saw that review. With the reviews that say it's soft at 300mm I also think we have to allow for questionable shooters' skills being an unknown factor as well as shooting conditions, 'cos some of the samples displayed are pretty awful, even the comparative shots using a different lens.

Best bet is to judge yourself.

I use a website - again can't link it here - that categorises images based on exif, lens info and camera info. This makes searching for images from a certain lens very easy.

You can then make a judgement on whether or not it produces results you'd be happy with without actually having to buy the lens The VR ones I've seen on that place look pretty descent to me.

Graham, I did investigate Sigma, but their lenses don't seem to be much cheaper than Nikon lenses these days, so not much incentive to go to them instead of Nikon

Yes - but they do offer a good range of different focal lengths that would reduce any 'overlaps' with your existing lenses. There is also the smaller zoom ratio that many consider is better than a superzoom range. 3 or 4 x zoom ratio was considered good. More than that used to be considered to compromise the quality. Of course, lens design has moved on, so maybe not so true today.
