Re: Is this reasonable.....

I saw on the AP web-site that apparently the MPA are looking at this.

Unfortunately, the victim of this re-used the card instead of keeping it to retrieve the images

Re: Is this reasonable.....

It would appear that we are living in a Police state. The Police seem to think that they can do as they please. They forget that we are the ones paying their wages. The situation will never improve until the public take a stand. The only trouble is that people fear reprisals.

Re: Is this reasonable.....

The story has appeared in other papers too - no guarantee of veracity, but I'm inclined to believe it.

The terrorists have won by causing us to give up the very freedoms we sought to defend. Very sad.

Re: Is this reasonable.....

I wonder just what would have happened if they had refused the request...obviously it would have resulted in more serious and time consuming action from the police but the outcome may have been far better for the tourists in long run. Part of me would like to think I would have refused the police's request but in reality I doubt I would have

Only decent people get stopped!......if you are one of these then somewhere sometime you will be pulled! There is a picture just waiting to be taken near to where I live of an old railway station its still in use, the next time it rains and if I am available I am going to go there and take a picture of it, making sure I am on the public highway (council pavement, not railway property) I shall go armed with my ID papers, there's a good chance of me being spotted by the police, so watch this space!

Re: Is this reasonable.....

Unfortunately we'll never know if the deleted photos were ever rescued using any of the freely available software that retrieve them on the net, I would love to have been able to publish the deleted photos just to say "Up Yours" to the some of the gestapo that we now have patrolling our streets.

Jenny Jones said

I suspect this is really why they don't want photographers on the street, so they can't be seen acting illegally. You can bet your bottom dollar if the Ian Tomlinson incident hadn't been caught on camera it would have been swept under the carpet and no-one would ever had heard of it.

Do these idiots think their going to catch some Al-Qaeda guy carrying out a surveillance on their next planned atrocity...I don't think so or they have been watching too much of The Bill. For all I hate these extremist groups for what they do and represent I think their daft enough to stand around and risk getting caught taking photos of sensitive areas.

Next thing they will be burning all the books and learning material in our libraries.

Re: Is this reasonable.....

The fact is that the policeman, if the newspaper article is true, acted illegally unless he had other valid reasons to suspect that the tourist were really terrorist. In any case the police are told NOT to erase images as these may be required as evidence if a charge is made. I will certainly continue to take photogaphs of anything I like in public apart from sensitive sites covered by the Official Secrets Act.

Recently a group of us Club members were in Birmingham and went around the Bull ring area taking photographs of buses, roads, buildings etc. We also photographed a person begging but with his permission and a small tip. A group of teenagers even stopped us to have their picture taken as they assumed that we were press but did seem too upset when we told them we were amateurs. As we were so blatently photographing in public and using tripods, we carried copies of the Home Office guidance to police authorities on photography in case we were stopped. Although we saw the occassional policeman no one challenged us at all.

I'll second that...

I have an uncle who is a police officer and he has always told me to complain if its appropriate. He has to reprimand his staff for stupid things - like a newbie failing to indicate and cutting me off in a patrol car... and his pet hate is police officers who make the force look bad.

I was illegally ticketed by an officer on a bit of a power trip late last year. Was only because I checked with my uncle that I found out. Didn't have to pay the fine in the end, but I had to take a day off work, resulting in a loss of wages to sort it out. (the funny part was it turned out that particular officer worked in the division my uncle is in charge of - amusing anyway)

You have to make a complaint, otherwise who polices the police?
