Replacing kit lens

I've been thinking recently about replacing my kit lenses starting with the Nikon 55-200mm. I've struggled recently whenever the light has been low getting a decent enough shutter speed, so I'm thinking of getting a lens with a constant aperture throughout the zoom range. Been reading up on the Sigma 70-200 2.8, comments on the sigma or alternative suggestions please.

Re: Replacing kit lens

What about Hacker's Nikkor 80-288 f2.8? in the classified ads? Now down to £500.

I've got the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO macro, and am well pleased with it, but I'd have been very tempted by this lens at the time I bought it.
