right click save image as

Im sure we are all aware of just how easy it is to right click an image and save as. But i have noticed on some sites they seem to be able to stop this from being done.

Any ideas how? is there a code or something i could place in my website?

Dave

Re: right click save image as

Photium does it built in thanksfully, Its a bit too long ago since I did web design to remember it fully

ETA: this should disable right click I'm not sure on this as I cannot remember the full code and Have taken this off a website guide. add this to the <body> section

Code:
<script language="javascript">
var message="YOUR WARNING MESSAGE HERE ";
function clickIE4(){
if (event.button==2){
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
function clickNS4(e){
if (document.layers||document.getElementById&&!document.all){
if (e.which==2||e.which==3){
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
}
if (document.layers){
document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
document.onmousedown=clickNS4;
}
else if (document.all&&!document.getElementById){
document.onmousedown=clickIE4;
}
document.oncontextmenu=new Function("alert(message);return false;")
</script>

Disclaimer : if PC gets up and throws itself out of the window its not my fault

But I own Alien Skin Blow Up and Genuine Fractals 5 Print Pro

I do own them but i'm just giving you a hard time.
what i'm trying to say is that the ONLY way you wont get your pictures stolen is... Do Not Put Them In The Internet there is no other way
You can disable right click or use a javascript, They will be hitting "prtscr" & then pasting in Photoshop like Dave said, or use Snag it.
You use a watermark and that makes it a little harder but Photoshop does wonders.
You can embed an "invisible watermark" but all they have to do is duplicate and the watermark is gone.
you can embed a tracking watermark but again duplicate takes care of that.
so back to square one, there is no way.. theres just these ways that makes it harder.
I recall we had a thread on this not too long ago.
I'll try to find it and link it in this thread.

Sotelo's got the best answer - the print screen is exactly the same as the right click save

It's a bit like car alarms I suppose - the thief will often just move on to easier pastures if you put a few roadblocks in their way.

Also Vista has a nifty in built tool for "snipping" anything on screen. I haven't tried using it om any copyright protected site but I'd say it's a fair bet it would capture the image without issue.

Re: right click save image as

A much shorter code to apply would be...

Code:
<body oncontextmenu="return false;">
Again it goes in the body of your webpage. The advantage with that (besides its obvious tiny size) is that its will prevent people using the right click menus by calling it from their keyboard using SHIFT+F10

Bear in mind that Opera ignores it, but there again it also ignores the Javascript code as well

I will try Steves code aswell as summers and see if theres any difference.

I think Willow sums it up here

I think you got to look at it this way ... "If someone goes to all that trouble to steal your photo then it doesn't matter if you think its good or not, they think its great" ... you really wont be able to stop them no matter what so just take it as a compliment

This works

but how do i get it to apply to a picture ive linked if this makes sense

For instance i can apply it to a page that has images on but if i link one of the picture so that it pops up on a seperate page then how do i apply the code to this new page which isnt actually a page but just a picture.

Re: right click save image as

Dave, the pop-up window is still a web page, even if it only has one image + nothing else on it, so you should be able to edit the source code to include the no-right-click code. Exactly how you would edit the source depends on how you created the web page I guess.

Thanks for reporting back on Steve's code, but of course I had no doubt that it would work

It doesnt matter what code you put to disable right click, all you have to do is drag the photo/image to your desktop and it saves it anyway...try it!!

i just tried draging charlotte to my desktop but she wouldnt come

i think i understand that there will always be a way to copy the images but if i can at least put the basics in place to prevent peeps from stealing my best shots then its a start.

Charlotte

i linked the picture to just the picture in my folder so how can i apply the code to just the picture?

The "no dragging" code I attached to my pic is working then

The short answer is I don't know The good news is that I believe there is a way, and I'm sure someone on here will know

Where is 'the folder'?

EDIT: Thing is, you can't apply the code to a pic, but you'd apply it to the pop-up window in which it appears. I just don't know how to do that though.

Re: right click save image as

LOL you're right Dave, I just tried all that, and now I'm in my own recycle bin too

Of course the reason it saved on your desktop as an html file is because you were in fact saving an html file, being the web page containing my personal profile, i.e. the avatar displayed in threads is a hot spot linking to my 'personal profile' web page. I figured that out by double-clicking the resulting html file which landed on my desktop
