"Security guards have no right....

....to prevent street photography" says Home Office and you can read more at the British Journal of photography. The Home Secretary said she would review security and terrorism and I, as a long time afficionado of candid and street/urban photography, welcome these steps.

The BSIA (British Security Industry Association) have issued their photography_guide to their members as to how they ought to react to photography and photographers. Also mentions their recommended relationship with the Police in questionable situations. Worth a read and I might even keep a copy in my bag.

Re: "Security guards have no right....

About time too. after all they seem to be letting terrorists in without border checks (to save money) in any case ...........er............ nobody costed out an attack yet

Ps Just look at what you can see on Google earth !!!!!! You could even find out how many greenhouses I've got in my garden if you knew where to look. :-) Now there's a thought is a satellite 100 miles above my property classed as being in a public place or on private land .

Re: "Security guards have no right....

The ludicrous thing about this stuff is that there is no consistency, two weeks ago I was on holiday taking numerous photos of Dungeness Nuclear power station and no-one batted an eye-lid, yet a couple of weeks before I read about a guy who was verbally abused for some time by a security guard for taking photos of his son in a shopping centre.

Dungeness rocks, the power station is only a small part

But Dungeness estate is so unreal anyway that the power station is just an amazing contrast and doesn't look or feel out of place there.

a couple of my photos from the trip (not a power station)

Re: "Security guards have no right....

Yes but it doesn't stop some of them trying. I presume just like anyone else they can do a citizens arrest but the big problem there is not every act of law breaking is an arrestable offence and they could find themselves in court for wrongful arrest.

Re: "Security guards have no right....

They didn't but some of them were under the illusion that they did, this gives us something to wave in their faces if they appear to be confused

I didn't know all that, Fiona. I knew some of it and since the article was dated 7th November I thought it would be of interest to members also. You are right that there has been a lot of talk in the last couple of years, including pro-active support from Austin Mitchell MP, but it now looks as though the concerns of amateur photographers are being given due consideration by the legislature.

Re: "Security guards have no right....

Lets all be sensible about this. This country has been attacked by terrorists and we need to be vigilant, BUT, we also have to allow people to live their lives too. Its called a compromise.
If your outside the MI5 building taking photo's of every angle and corner, then expect to be challenged......but not by a security guard, by a big burly policeman with a big burly gun pointing at you! If, however, your out with the wife and kids at Tower Bridge taking pictures, your unlikely to be challenged, certainly unlikely by police. Security guards are mostly wanna be Old Bill anyway, they have no power other than any other citizen in a public place anyway, so ignore them

Re: "Security guards have no right....

i guess its cos i have never been challenged by a security guard.......... well certainly not in a public place anyway the few times i have been stopped i have been in places i shouldnt and they were well withihn their rights to stop me....... didn't stop me taking photos after a few nice words tho.

I wonder if its different up here with us having the right to roam which covers photography anyway?
spose its all good at the end of hte day
