see the picture

Im not sure if this is the right place for this so feel free to move it,
Seeing all the young photographers following one another around on Sunday got me thinking into how different people approach their photography.
When im off on assignment etc I usually visualise the image/s well before I arrive. I know in my minds eye what I want from the shoot and find this makes the shoot itself almost automatic. I don't always get what I want or visualised but I do find it makes the whole shoot easier some how.
Am I rambling?
So how do others approach things?

Re: see the picture

Most deffinately have an idea of where and what type of pictures I want, depends on the day whether i get it, especially horse events are a law unto themselves.

I look at the weather and conditions and as Im fairly new will gen up on whats needed the night before or if i can visit before hand I will.

It seems to work better if you know your subject and can anticipate its moves, eg with the horses jumping or showing , or people playing sports, etc

Re: see the picture

If it's a photocall/shoot I usually try and come up with some idea beforehand (even if it doesn't come off!). But fast thinking and flexibility is definitely needed - given vagaries weather, people, location, etc!

If it's for my own pics then very rarely do I have a plan/preconceptions - keep open-minded for whatever there is and then see where my camera leads me

Re: see the picture

I thought I knew where my camera was going to lead me an hour ago. Driving home from work glorious blue sky with enough fluffy clouds to add real interest and sun on the fells. Now i am ready to set out the clouds have all gone so will try something else. I have several ideas for a panoramic of town with the back drop of hills so will go for that I think. As an amateur and just getting back into photography again it is all a bit of an unplanned adventure.

Re: see the picture

I recently attended an event called 'Slamm Jamm' in liverpool. It's a rollerblading event. One of the various prize winning competitions is called 'Battle Royale'. This event is 'random' in that the next obstacle to be battled out for 3 minutes is chosen from a hat, then the names are chosen from a different hat.
So, we have 2 participants, 1 obstacle and 3 minutes. at the end of the 3rd minute, a new obstacle is selected and the skaters move on to that area. By the 4th minute the second part of the event is underway. At 7 minutes, everything changes again.

Now, take this event, add 2-3 off camera flashes and tripods per photographer, pocket wizards and gadget infinity remotes, 500-600 people bustling for position, 20-30 photographers, 20-30 videographers and cramped space...what you have is a nightmare for setting up and it's amazing when you get something worthwhile.
Other days are quiet and therefore i can think about the shot and the place beforehand.

Re: see the picture

What is also a nightmare for setting up is a herd of cows who suddenly decide to wander over and see what you are doing. Had to curtail my shoot this afternoon. Not only were they wandering into the way but up close they are uncomfortably large.
Still just uploaded to hard drive. 95 shots to work through. Be busy for a while

Back to subject. I have had this particular picture in my mind for months. Now will find out if it really works

OK here we go. Missed the light. Fantastic earlier as I drove home. Sunlight, blue skies and fluffy clouds. Tweaked this a lot in CS2 to bring out all the detail so to me there are some odd highlights. ND filter to help sky and photostitch (Canon) to join the bits. (after a conversion from RAW to JPEG). PHEW!!!

Wil revisit this though to get better. Only 5 mins drive from home.

Re: see the picture

As I rarely visit a place more than once with the camera I tend to just wait until I see what the conditions are when I get there before making any real plans, on the occasions I do repeatedly visit one place I will have a think about what I'd like to try and photograph while I'm there that I maybe missed out on before but once again it all depends on the conditions I find when I arrive.

Re: see the picture

A couple of years ago I wanted photos of trees. I was making an AV containing trees from Acer to Zelkova. An A to Z of trees is just possible if you use latinised names and if you include an Xmas tree. While it was fairly easy to find the names it was difficult to find trees ... until I discovered that the Westonbirt on line tree catalog actually gave the 12 figure OS grid refferences for each tree in their collection. Armed with GPS it was then a relatively simple matter to find the trees I wanted to photograph.
