Selling a photo - advice please!

I've had an email from an illustrator who would like to draw from one of my photos. They have asked if I would consider this and if so how much would the charge be. (plus send me a copy of the final illustration and link back to my original photo). I've never sold a photo before so I feel quite honoured! But I haven't got a clue how much to suggest. Can anyone offer any advice?

Re: Selling a photo - advice please!

p.s. looking at their website they sell their illustrations for $17.95 and they seem to offer them as limited edition prints of up to 500.

Re: Selling a photo - advice please!

Mmm.. 500 x $17.95 = £8975................

Try you retaining the copyright, but allowing them 500 'prints' for $1 per print - $500.

Re: Selling a photo - advice please!

Standard I would use is without copywrite £75.00
With copywrite £250.00.
Or a Dragon Den or £12.50 plus 10% of all sales but then how do you prove sales.

Good luck and well done.

Re: Selling a photo - advice please!

Thanks. Although that sounds a lot they could make, I don't get the impression from their website and doing a bit of research that they're quite that professional/sell that much. I sounded them out a bit more and asked a few others who had done similar. One of the things I quite like is that he's also now offered to make a donation to one of the Big Cat charities I support - the photo is a big cat (and in case its not obvious from my avatar thats one of my passions!).

Re: Selling a photo - advice please!

If you want the big cats to benefit then get him to pay you the agreed amount (what ever that is) and donate all/some of that yourself to the big cats. This is a business deal and should be treated as such, if he is genuine then he has no reason not to give you the money instead...in the end it costs him the same
