Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

Camera GF-1, lens 20mm & 100-300mm

Just wondering what you guys do on holiday when taking photos, Raw or Jpeg?

Reason I ask is 99% of the time I usually shoot raw and the PP afterwards in Lightroom or Elements9. On my holiday this year I can see me taking hundreds of photos using the GF1, would you still shoot raw or shoot jpeg to save you a lot of PP afterwards and cut down on amount of storage cards needed, or the hassle finding a computer in a strange country to get pics onto cd to clear space on a card? Taking the laptop is out of the question.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

I always use RAW. I also carry a few cards so don't have any problems with running out of memory. I will usually carry about 50GB of card capacity, but never get anywhere near filling it up.

Some people use portable devices like the Epson P-2000

Pixalo Photographic Equipment Reviews - P-2000 Multimedia Storage Viewer -

But now you could match its capacity with 10 or 20 4GB cards (or fewer larger capacity cards) cheaper. However, it still offers a back-up for your pictures even if you did not re-use the cards.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

I always shoot Raw+Jpeg. If you keep the jpeg quality to standard then its fine for holiday snaps and still capable of 8*10s but the real bonus is when your PP'ing you can quickly scan your smaller jpegs in lightroom before deciding which are worthy of RAW editing.
I dont have a GF1 but I am thinking a RAW+standard jpeg may be around 11-15mb (just a guess) but even at 15mb that's roughly 2000 RAW images with an accompanying jpeg on a 32gb card.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

Never having owned 4/3 camera I did a little checking and a RAW+jpeg on your gf1 is probably closer to 17-18mb (you will have to check this yourself) but thats still around 1700-1800 shots on a 32gb card which by any standards is a lot of piccies.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

Surely it depends on what you are looking for in terms of capturing the scene dynamic range and what you intend to do with the images afterwards. I am only looking for competition images even when on holiday so must have the highest quality for A3 prints and I often capture higher dynamic range scenes. For me Raw is essential. However, it does not follow that Raw is essential for others. If you avoid the higher dynamic range scenes and are only displaying images on the web or similar then it may not be necessary to use Raw. It might also depend how critical the viewers are likely to be be (e.g. Mother or Competition Judge).

One further thing to consider, if you are going a long way, spending a lot of money and to a photogenic location, you might kick yourself when you return and realise that Raw would have been better and now you cannot retake the shots.

Just take Raw, Raw + Jpeg takes up more space. Just jpeg isn't an option

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

Some interesting replies folks, thanks I will be looking into the raw + jpeg options, I'll have a wee play about with the setiings before I go on hols then decide on what cards to get.
I prefer the Sandisk cards as I have never had a problem with them even back when I used CF cards in my slr days, one or two other brands had let me down.

If you run into a lot of people like me I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. The places photograghers go seem to draw people from all over the world. i run into people from your part of the world and have had some good conversations with the wifes of the guy's crawling around on the rocks trying to get that best angle. Don't want to be a **** about it but that's what I always do is take good pictures so I have room left on the card and then dump them on a storage device or laptop. Cheer up, I know you'll have a good time. Also I've always taken two different kinds of cameras and that doubles the space I need. I've never had a problem. Have a good trip and shoot raw.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your foreign holiday Fiona, sometimes depending on where you go the weather conditions can be superb for taking photos, blue skies fluffy white clouds.

I'm going to Madeira for the first time and from what I hear it very photogenic. Can't wait.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

Fiona,
Take JPEG for the holiday "Snaps" then you don't need to do any work on them. But when you come across a really good subject of something special change over to RAW and you can work on it back home. JPEG is perfectly good enough for record shots and keep to RAW for the winners.
Have a good time and behave yourself.
Colin.

This is my first DSLR and it is my first time bringing DSLR for a holidays travel trip.
For overseas trip, do you shoot in Raw or Jpeg?

For someone who puts their occupation as a wedding photographer, I'd say you are either an extremely poor wedding photographer or are just trying to spam our forums with your signature links.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

I go abroad quite often, although the holiday is the main reason for going I do shoot a lot of pictures, I mainly shoot High Quality fine jpegs! it takes too much of my time afterwards to convert if I shoot in raw.........I always try and get things right first time in the camera that means less messing about on the keyboards......if you have a good camera and lens jpegs should not pose a problem, I print my jpegs up to A3 when needed, and I always get the quality that I am after....have a nice holiday and dont let raw v jpegs get in your way.........

That's very good Max but we don't promote brands on Pixalo, now either contribute something sensible or don't contribute at all.

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

Such dilemmas! Go with what suits your set up and intended end result. If you have the storage capacity (No brand names mentioned stepheno!) shoot Jpeg on one card and RAW on the second. If you have one card and it is large enough shoot both on the one card. If you dont have large capacity in cards and want to print up to A3 go with Jpeg fine / large. Whatever your set up and intended results. . . . . . enjoy yourself and enjoy your photography!

Re: Shoot raw or jpeg on holiday ?

The choice of RAW vs. JPG is more an individual workflow choice question for all shooting not just for vacation shooting. Yes, RAW files are larger, and if you are constrained on the amount of CF memory and/or in the ability to offload photos to other devices while on the road, the larger files might be an issue for you when the 10x greater consumption of memory is the issue.
