Shooting God - how the devil do you do it?

You know the one - sun streaming through the clouds, trees, mist etc.
How do you get the best results?
I snapped this shot while taking the dog for a walk using a Canon 50mm on F/4 at 1/160th and ISO100. But I'm sure it could be improved. Suggestions to date include using ND filters and slight time exposure.
I'd appreciate your thoughts as fog/sun happens reasonably often and I'll get another go at it to try out your ideas.

I'm not sure that it can be improved except maybe a touch more contrast. Exposure is good, nice shot

Yes that is a wonderful shot, thought it was mono, then noticed the nice subtle colours. Perhaps move to where the sun is a little more in front of you ( ) to get the rays streaming into the frame rather than more like along it like they are here...

I think the only criticism I can come up with is the lack of any bright foreground to really anchor the picture. There was a picture like this in one of the photo mags this month and the main difference was a big, moss-covered rock in the foreground that was beautifully lit.

As it stands it's a nice picture but your eye tends to wander around it looking for something to grab onto.
