I have had a D40 for about 3 months now, and I am wondering if I should upgrade to a D70s. I love the D40, however its lack of AF motor is frustrating, especially since I just bought a 50mm F1.8 AF. I am willing to overlook the screen size and the overall size of the D70s, however the one thing I won't overlook is image quality. Does the D70s have equal or better IQ than the D40? Are there any other advantages to the D70s that I have not mentioned?

From a personal point of view, I find the D40 too small and prefer the feel and handling of the chunkier D70s - and I have got small hands too.

I'm not sure if there is any sensor difference in the two cameras, but I think the D40 has three focus points whereas the D70s has five. The D70s will, of course use any AF lenses, and there might be other features that were stripped out of the D40 in order to allow it to be priced competitively. When I bought my D70s around three years ago, with the 18-70 kit lens it cost around £740 - close on $1500!

I think that you need to compare the specifications of both models to see where the differences lie.

D70 is a cracking camera & represents great value for money. Unless printing beyond A3 size, you should have no problems with quality of shots.

So the D70 is overall a better camera in terms of IQ than the D40? Or are they identical sensors in different bodies?

I've got A2 prints from my D70s that look great.

Not sure if the D40 sensor is any different from the D70s. They are both 6MP and I doubt there would have been a different/newer sensor of the same resolution. The new sensor was in the D40x, which, of course, was much higher resolution.

I'd guess that the IQ in both cameras will be the same. The D70s could be deemed to be a better camera if it has features that the D40 lacks, and will be useful to you.

As with any camera really, alot of the 'image quality' side of things will be down to the lenses you use with it. I have seen amazing shots taken with the lower end bodies like the D40/70 and I have also seen really poor shots taken with D300's.

I think upgrading to the D70 would be a good idea. Just make sure that get some good glass too

Nikon 18-70mm std kit lens that came with it is a cracking lens.

I'm not planning on buying the lens too, unless I can find a miracle deal. I already have 2 lenses, and my budget is whatever I can sell my mint D40 body for.
