shutter speeds

What would be considered a good average speed to freeze subject movement i.e animals/birds? I,ve missed some really good spur of the moment opportunities lately simply because I,ve had the wrong lens fitted or set too slow, mainly set too slow.

Re: shutter speeds

It depends to some extent on what sort of movement - erratic or constant. With a bird in level flight, you may be able to pan so that the body is sharp and the wings have motion blur, but it isn't easy!

In general, I would try for a speed of 1/500 or faster. You can't be too fast!

This is one of my (rare!) better efforts, taken at 1/400...

Re: shutter speeds

Taken at 1/500, but still a little "soft" I think. Could have done with being bit quicker..

Re: shutter speeds

You can't be too slow! 144mm @ 1/125

But you can be too fast! (I dislike 'frozen' shots!) 300mm @ 1/400

Re: shutter speeds

i agree with markulous but i think daves biker needs to be frozen so it all depends on the subject i think that jags bird is just enought i like the slight blurring of the wing tips
