Sigma 120mm - 400mm

Have the opportunity to buy a second hand Sigma 120mm to 400mm HSM OS for a reasonable price. A lot less than the Canon 100mm - 400mm. Reviewed recently in Photoplus and rated very highly and just behind the more expensive and larger Sigma 150mm - 500mm. Any owners out there

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

If the price is good it will be a good buy

It gets good press and Mark rates the 150-500 version.

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

I've had good results from mine but bear in mind that its considerably heavier than a 300mm

Here's a shot at 400mm

Stabilisation is a bit noisy and can be distracted but IMHO overall a good lens especially if you're not paying the full price

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

Thanks Taddy, by the way I visited your site and your pictures are great. As amatter of interest why is the stabilisation noisy? a fault or a know issue with this lens. I have visited reviewing sites and the only consistent gripe is the weight.

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

Can't comment directly on the 120-400 but I imagine it has the same OS as the 150-500 and it's one of my irritations, albeit minor, that the OS sounds like a jet taking off (or landing, depending on your preference!). But as it puts it head and shoulders above the IS on the Canon 100-400 (which is near silent, BTW) it's a small price to pay!

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

I can only comment on the 150-500 which I had but swapped for the Canon 100-400 which I think is better. Perhaps I had a sub standard Sigma. The OS is noisy as mentioned about but it also had the habit of "jittering" the image in the view finder when it was working very distracting. I mentioned this to a Sigma rep who said it was normal ???. Also another Sigma rep said that it was a bit soft at over 450 mm. I know Markulous really rates this lens but I was pleased to swap mine for the Canon.

I would carefully check the lens before you buy it.

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

I have the sigma 120 400 and also have a 70 200 2.8 vr nikon. The AF on the sigma is noisy and doesnt exactly leap into action. However ive had reasonable results with it. I had a Sigma 120 500 unstabilised and sold it on. Ive had a play with a Nikon 200 400 vr and it is in a different league to the Sigma however it should be at i think getting on for £4500.
To me the sigma even with OS isnt a viable hand held lense its pretty heavy and is slow to AF however its worth the £700 or so i think its now selling for.

Thanks for the compliment.

Its not faulty, just the way they're constructed. Not a problem for motorsport but it can be embarassing if you're not alone in an echoey bird hide http://www.pixalo.com/community/imag...s/innocent.gif

I presume you'll have the opportunity to try it before you buy!

Also I forgot to mention that the tripod collar is well placed at the balance point so its easy to balance on a mono or tripod

If you don't have anything near the focal length, Go for it!

P.S. If you use it with an extender, autofocus will not work with most bodies but manual focus is OK

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

Taddy. Tried before I bought and now I understand what you mean. Taken some pictures and am happy with initial results. Now for the stupid question. The instructions don't explain positions one and two on the OS??????? Regards

Re: Sigma 120mm - 400mm

My first two examples using my second hand 120mm - 400mm Sigma. Shot handheld at 400mm. Having paid £499 it presents an enormous saving over the similar Canon. Yes its heavy but I am still learning and first impressions are good. Regards
