sigma 50-500mm

i have a sigma 50-500mm lens i have been using with my canon 400D. it is just under 2 years old and i noticed acouple of months ago that my images were very soft at first i thought it was my photography. i tried everything and in desparation sent it to sigma imaging to be checked. i was informed it had a fault and would cost £30 to fix... 3 weeks later i recieved a second estimate for £130 and told the lens has to go back to japan and will be 6 to 8 weeks. this lens has never been dropped or mistreated in any way and has been "babied". i have tried twice to find out from sigma what has caused this fault and why. To be quite honest it has been like talking to myself .The people i have spoken to have been no help what so ever. I was considering buying the sigma 10-20 mm lens but im having second thoughts . have i been unlucky or are Sigma not as good as they would at first appear.

Re: sigma 50-500mm

Well, I've got 2 x dSLR and a few lenses from Sigma and have found them to be good at sorting out problems - sand in shutter release (my fault, really) and squeaking focus, both fixed under warranty. Know that they fix locally unless the problem is more serious or requires specialist fitting/parts in which case it needs returning to the factory in Japan

I think in a situation like this it all depends who you talk to! if you get the wrong person you have had it, if its a good dealer that knows its stuff then you should be OK, if its not all right at the end of the story then make it known to everybody and dont buy anymore Sigma stuff! thats the way I work and think!

Re: sigma 50-500mm

was the £30 a quote or an estimate?
if it was a quote they have to stick to the price, if it was an estimate they dont.
