Re: Sky Diving

You will probably only need the 70-300, as even 1 mile up (5000ft) the plane and people look tiny. Watch out for underexposure, best to use spot or maybe centre weighted metering. Don't stand too close to the landing area because during the last few feet of the fall the size of a person increases too rapidly to follow to keep them in the frame. Give yourself a chance, to get the person + parachute and stay around 50-80 metres away from the landing area (you may be obliged to be further away). I have shot several drops where I fly in France (one of the French skydive schools - Le Blanc), and the jump from the plane is often just a speck using 400mm.

If you have a good pair of binoculars, take them.

Re: Sky Diving

Agree with Graham. The 70-300 is all you will need. You are probably aware that shooting against the sky will result in the subject being under exposed. Graham has also mentioned this.

I'd suggest getting in some practice by shooting aircraft, the tops of telegraph poles or anything against the sky. Try manually using exposure compensation. Unless it is very overcast I think that 2 stops would be a good starting point - but remember to try different conditions so that on the day tyou will have shot in the prevailing conditions.

Depending on how you have your camera set up you will be able to go up or down either 1/3 of a stop or 1/2 of a stop with each step.

Re: Sky Diving

Thanks both Grahams. Some very sound advice.
I will try and get some preshot practice today as he goes up
Tomorrow at 8.30.
I will be taking my Fuji s3289 so I can switch quickly if need be.
Plus if there are any issues with my D5100.

Thanks again.

Re: Sky Diving

WHICH AIRFIELD IS THE JUMP AT ? I WOULD NOT GUARANTEE, THAT HE WILL WILL TAKE OFF, OR JUMP AT 8.30 AM, THIS WILL BE WEATHER PERMITTING, ESPECIALLY WIND SPEED AND OBVIOUSLY IF IT'S POURING WITH RAIN, HE WILL NOT JUMP.

IS IT A TANDEM OR SOLO JUMP ?
