SNOW!!!

I am going snowboarding at the weekend, and am looking forward to falling over, and of course some great scenery opportunities. I remember reading in a magazine a while ago that taking pictures of snow can be very tricky…… and reducing the exposure by a couple of stops would stop the snow from being ‘bleached’ out in the photos.

Does any one have advice/ experience about this??

Thanks in advance…..

Re: SNOW!!!

Yep - that's the usual advice. Can depend on the conditions though - bright Sun v overcast. Might do worse that to try some test shots in sun and shade before you start on the ones you might want to keep.

A UV filter is probably a good idea too.

Re: SNOW!!!

Ehm I'd ADD a stop or so not reduce with most cameras. The meter tends to try and make the snow grey which means it tends to under expose very white scenes. Not to mention with digital the desire to expose to the right.

Re: SNOW!!!

I was in Switzerland last week for a work meeting and managed to get a few pictures of the Snow. I was using the Canon S2 before it broke. The sky was bright blue and the pictures came out perfectly at the standard automatic settings. The few manual shots I did also worked OK.

I guess cameras / metering systems may be slightly different one to another. The best advice has already been mentioned - take some test shots before you start shooting for real.

Re: SNOW!!!

I have taken many snow pictures and I find that the pol. filter is a must along with the stop adjustments you mentioned. I also set the WB to the Cloudy presetting. Have fun!

Re: SNOW!!!

Great shots can be had ,especially if the sky is blue and with lots of snow then use a (polorising filter.)
As a precaution use the exposure bracketing setting on your camera.
Have a good time. My Son in Law is snowboarding next week.

Re: SNOW!!!

You are right to think it can be tricky, as Vinny says, snow usually needs a bit extra to show white, that is if it is mainly snow you are photographing. If however the scene has a fair proportion of mid and dark tones as well the meter may not be too far off the mark. The important thing is not to burn the snow completely out as no amount of processing can enhance detail that is just not there, however if you get it a little grey you can process that back to white with detail in it, unless of course you have white out conditions. Which brings me back to Brians' point about bracketing, it doesn't cost anything to take extra shots as an insurance.
