Smile Software Request.

Hey everyone!

I trust th@ I find you all happy and well

I need to get hold of some software for my Windows laptop which will enable me to 'upsize' my pictures so th@ I can submit them to 'Alamy', (they need to be a minimum of 48MB, uncompressed).

I currently have no software and none came with my camera, (Fuji S7000), when I purchased it from 7dayshop.com and I was wondering if any of you could suggest a decent package which will allow me to upsize and downsize my pictures please? Money is a bit tight right now, so I am unable to purchase the full on software packages, but if any of you have any suggestions, (other than robbing a bank ), I would be most grateful!

Thanks in advance and all the best, Jonny

Re: Software Request.

I can't recommend anything that is free and will maintain enough quality for Alamy to accept however most of the major software packages allow you to download them as fully working trials. These usually are valid for 1 month and that should at least for now allow you to get your images to the correct file sizes.

Someone else might be able to help out here...wait for their replies too

For links to the major packages check out our downloads section.

Hope that helps

Re: Software Request.

Thanks mate! I do not mind spending money, but would go for something @ the 'lesser' end of the price scale. As soon as I 'make it' on 'Alamy' , (I hope), I shall get some decent software! Funny how since having been registered on here, I have been inspired by so many people and I just want to take more, better pictures! WOOHOO!!!!!!

Re: Software Request.

You can try using The Gimp. It's a free, open source photo application. A lot of people use it as an alternative to Photoshop. It's a bit hard to learn at first (but so is Photoshop), so it's a viable alternative. The fact that you can get it for free certainly doesn't make it hard to just give it a shot.

Im intrigued as to the benefit of "upsizing" pictures, I can comprehend any, but then Im new to photography.

Re: Software Request.

Larger pics, higher resolution, bigger prints

In theory, if you upsize to a larger picture (in order to get bigger print) interpolation will fill in the gaps making the transition in size smoother. Realistically, this is not always the case (tho all cameras interpolate from RAW anyway)

Re: Software Request.

Certain image libraries require file sizes to be bigger than X for them to be accepted. If your camera does not output files that are big enough as standard then by running them through an image processing package you can sometimes get past the image libraries checks.

Up sizing is also used when you want to have large prints done.

That's two examples where it can be useful.

Re: Software Request.

Depends on the size of the original and the final size plus which software you use.

In real terms you are losing quality when you up size or downsize, however if that loss is noticeable to your viewing audience is the big question.

Re: Software Request.

Hi jonnynation,

I'd be interested to hear what you decided to do as, funnily enough, today I have been considering contributing some pics to Alamy.

Anyway, good luck!

Re: Software Request.

I've been looking at ImageMagic recently to do some batch reszing. Infact to resize some pictures down to post here. It's free and the quality for reducing pictures was great. Might be worth a try.

It is command line driven, which suited my purposes well.

Re: Software Request.

One thing to remember when sending images to a large image library is that you will need to keep on sending images in, before you start seeing a reasonable return you will need upwards of 1000 images.
I am attending a seminar later in the month with one of the top chaps at Alamy who will be discussing the in and out of the library.
