Thumbs up Some Excellent Photographic Tools from Microsoft

Just stumbled apon this the other day, called Microsoft PowerToys, a set of lots of different downloadable tools for making things easier and more customizable for photographers

-One allows Windows to show RAW files as thumbnails just like it would jpegs so you can browse them easier

-Another allows you to resize 1 or a whole batch of photographs by right clicking on the picture...i was thinking this may be especially useful for uploading photos to Pixalo

-And another one which allows you to set a webcam or digital camera to take photos at certain time intervals so you can make timelapse movies or record the growth of a flower etc.

Admins may want to sticky this as i can see it being very useful for many Pixalo goers...not sure whether this is the right section to post, but admins can move it if they want...

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

hope this was helpful

Re: Some Excellent Photographic Tools from Microsoft

I stumbled across those a while ago. The RAW thumbnailer viewer was certainly an attraction. Sadly though I had lots of trouble getting it installed. Well to be honest I never did get there.

My version of XP apparently had a back level version of the MS installer; initial attempts to get this updated failed. After some time, I gave up.

"you millage may vary" as they say... so don't take this too negatively :-)

The multi resize option does sound very useful; I was looking for some similar batch processing tools recently. Perhaps I'll stop by and take another look.

Re: Some Excellent Photographic Tools from Microsoft

Yes, I found some of these "Toys" to be very useful and far from being toys. One I have used is the one for Colour settings. You can view a two dimensional representation of the colour profile stored on your computer. I compared my Epson 1270 profile supplied by Epson with the bespoke profile produced for my set up. The results are both generally OK but the bespoke profile is better though the differences subtle. However, when viewing them on this Power tool they are very different.

The Raw file viewer is essential for those working in RAW but I suspect it only works for Canon and Nikon.

Re: Some Excellent Photographic Tools from Microsoft

I have the RAW thumbnail viewer installed and it makes life MUCH easier as I can see all my pictures, irrespective of their format.

PowerToys is always worth looking at as it contains things developed by MS software engineers so are usually likely to work despite not being covered by Windows support per se.

PowerToys have been around for many years so this is not a new thing. I think I first started getting PT utilities way back in Windows 95, might even have been Windows 3.1 but not sure. Worth a look for anyone just coming across this for the first time.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Some Excellent Photographic Tools from Microsoft

Continuing this on a similar vein...

Not many people seem to know about the Microsoft research website. This is where programs are developed and showcased before being integrated into the other mainstream software, being packaged and sold as standalone software or just being shelved due to one reason or another. Contained within this site are dozens of interesting and quirky software programs and applications that are at worst fun to play with and sometimes simply wonderful.

Microsoft Group Shot falls into the second category and was designed to create a perfect group photo out of a series of group photos. With Group Shot you can select your favourite parts in each shot of the series and Group Shot will automatically build a composite image.

Microsoft Research Group Shot

The best thing about this is that everything on the site is totally free and fully working. For a complete list of available downloads you can visit this link
